Personalization Change Size of Taskbar Icons in Windows 11

  • Staff
taskbar.png

Changing the size of the taskbar icons no longer works starting with Windows 11 build 22621.1343.

If you wanted to make the taskbar icons larger, you can still increase the DPI scaling level to do so. It will also make everything appear larger though.

The taskbar in Windows 11 shows the Start menu, Search, Task View, Widgets, File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Store buttons (icons) aligned to the center by default.

You can change the size of taskbar icons to small, medium (default), or large.

This tutorial will show you how to change the size of taskbar icons to small, medium, or large for your account in Windows 11.

Depending on your DPI and screen resolution settings, using small taskbar icons could cause system tray icons and/or text (clock) on the far right corner of the taskbar to be misaligned.

EXAMPLE: Small, medium, and large taskbar icons

small_taskbar_icons.jpg
medium_taskbar_icons.jpg
large_taskbar_icons.jpg

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (small), step 3 (medium), or step 4 (large) below for what you would like to do.

2 To Change Size of Taskbar Icons to Small

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Change_taskbar_icons_size_to_small_in_Windows_11.bat

(Content of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /V TaskbarSi /T REG_DWORD /D 0 /F

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

3 To Change Size of Taskbar Icons to Medium

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Change_taskbar_icons_size_to_default_medium_in_Windows_11.bat

(Content of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /V TaskbarSi /T REG_DWORD /D 1 /F

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

4 To Change Size of Taskbar Icons to Large

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Change_taskbar_icons_size_to_large_in_Windows_11.bat

(Content of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /V TaskbarSi /T REG_DWORD /D 2 /F

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

5 Save the .bat file to your desktop.

6 Unblock the .bat file.

7 Run the .bat file

8 You will now notice your screen flicker and a command prompt quickly opens and closes as the explorer process is restarted to apply the registry changes.

9 You can now delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Thank you, sir.

On a related (and troublesome in old Windows 10) topic, is there a way to increase the size of the notification tray icons in W11? They look mighty tiny in your screenshots, and I recall many complaints on the Net that users couldn't find a way to increase the size of those icons.

I'm only aware of making the notification area icons larger by increasing the DPI scaling level. This of course will make everything larger.

Bummer. I was hoping they'd get around to making those icons independently scalable. OTOH, those icons seldom require r/l clicking, compared to taskbar icons, so having them writ large may not be very important.

Hello mate, :-)

It looks like you will need to unblock the download to allow it.

It's required to restart the explorer process to apply after making the registry change.

Just a comment that with a in-place repair installation, the setting previous applied is kept which for me was small and did not revert back to medium. :)

There was a thread about this within the past few weeks except I couldn't find it after spending some time but basically....
This has been a problem ever since 22000.65 as Microsoft also responded they will not fix it as it's a unsupported registry hack.

This is why I am always hesitant to do registry hacks on the user interface. Especially on an operating system in beta.
You never know how long it's gonna be supported.

That's why I always include an undo option for those that do try them. :-)

Ah, ok. Thanks guys :)
Running with default now. A touch annoying because it's huge and gets in the way even with auto-hide :p

There is another way to get the icons small but ofcourse everything else in general will be small, that's to change the dpi scaling.

Ok, I followed to DPI tut', changing Win8DpiScaling to 1 and tried LogPixels 72 at first and when that did nothing except telling me "A custom scale factor is set." with the option to "Turn off custom scaling and sign out" in Settings>Display, I tried LogPixels at 48. Still nothing. Tried with Win8DpiScaling 0 as well. Nada.

Seems like they don't want people to use scaling less than 100%.
Oh well. Medium sized get-in-the-way annoying taskbar it is.

So much frustrating cosmetic stuff in Win11. Simple things. And they don't seem to care.

Hard to say, easier to just use method 2 which does not require doing the registry. On my system with a 15" 4K 3840x2160 screen, the default is 250% and it already gets smaller at 225% and then 200% except the text is blury which was fixed with method 2 at 150dpi.
