Personalization Change Start Menu All apps View in Windows 11

Start_banner.webp

This tutorial will show you how to change the view layout of the All apps section on the Start menu for your account in Windows 11.

The Start menu in Windows 11 is comprised of three sections: Pinned, All apps, and Recommended.

The All apps section on the Start menu shows all your installed apps in either a Category, Grid, or List view. With All now on the top-level, apps are easily accessible without having to navigate to a secondary page. The new default Category view automatically groups your apps by category for quick access to your most used categories and apps. So, if your most used apps are Outlook and Solitaire, you can expect those apps to bubble up to the top in their respective categories. Categories are formed when there are at least 3 apps in each respective category. Otherwise, they will remain in the “Other” category. Grid view is ordered alphabetically like List view but allows for better scanning of all your installed apps with more horizontal real estate. The Start menu will remember your last used view so you can reliably launch your apps with the view you prefer most.

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Start]
"AllAppsViewMode"=dword:00000001

4 Use List View for All Apps on Start Menu

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

All_Apps_List_view_on_Start_menu.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Start]
"AllAppsViewMode"=dword:00000002

5 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

6 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

7 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

8 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

9 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Well, the command worked; there was no error message anymore. I reboot the machine twice. But the result was none. Nothing has changed in the start menu. I don't have View under All. And I don't have any new configuration regarding the start menu. I have used 48433719 too. My Windows is in Portuguese. I don't know if this can be the problem.

Ok, no problems at all.
I remember I have another laptop (in Portuguese) with Dev build and the new start menu is there, ok.
Thank you anyway!

I don't recall seeing this second vivetool code in your cmd prompt 49453572. Make sure it's enabled. These are the two for the new menu itself.

Hey FrancoDT, your suggestion made it happen. After the ViVeTool command, I rebooted, and Windows started, but I had to wait a little more than usual for the taskbar to show up. But when it showed, there was the new stuff. Very beautiful and nice.
Thank you Franco DT and Brink for giving me the right path.

Ah, glad to hear that got it working for you. So many vivetool codes for new features, it's easy to miss one. I know Brink has helped me enable many features so I try to pay it forward when I can.

New to win 11 pro.

Open shell always worked on 10 fine, then it started crashing on 11. Restored default start menu, but how do I get categories back?

Also tried Windhawk without success.

Help please

New to win 11 pro.

Open shell always worked on 10 fine, then it started crashing on 11. Restored default start menu, but how do I get categories back?

Also tried Windhawk without success.

Help please

Hello Chris, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

It did but, just one issue, but Right Click to pin to taskbar now fails to show. Not sure if they are connected or not?

It shouldn't be. I still have "Pin to taskbar" with the new Start menu.

I have been using Open-Shell on Windows 11 since the first week after Windows 11 was officially released. It's been running stable like a rock. It's so boring, sometimes it makes me feel like I want to break something. :tears:

Another part of the problem was that right-clicking on the desktop also froze explorer.

Worked out, part of the problem. Parts of the Open shell were still installed. Crashing now cured but still have issues with pin to taskbar.

A suggestion I have found:
1. Press Win + R → type: cmd → Ctrl + Shift + Enter (admin)
2. Run:
ie4uinit.exe -show
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
DEL /A /Q "%localappdata%\IconCache.db"
shutdown /r /f /t 0

Bit worried that the apps that are on the taskbar already may well disappear.

@hdmi If you need help cocking up your computer, I can do it for you.
