This tutorial will show you how to change the taskbar position to any edge of the screen for your account in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26300.8493 (Experimental 25H2), you can now change the position of taskbar on your screen. You can select the side of the screen you want your taskbar on: bottom, top, left, or right. In these other positions, tooltips, flyouts, and animations will still come from the taskbar, and most customization settings like small taskbar and never combine taskbar icons will work with all locations.

Support for touch gestures, Search box, and Ask Copilot in alternate locations is in progress. Auto-hidden taskbar and touch optimized taskbar are not yet supported.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26300.8553 (Experimental 25H2) for Insiders, you can now use a touch swipe to invoke the taskbar when using alternate taskbar positions.

Reference:

If you do not have the taskbar position setting available in the build above yet and would like to try it now, then you can use the ViVeTool command below to enable it.

vivetool.exe /enable /id:59213768

I remember that News and interests in W10 would not work if the taskbar was moved to the sides or top so I suspect that the Widgets feature has impacted the freedom to move the taskbar location.

I can't wait to see if some of the issues are FIXED. The one thing I was a little disappointed with was the inability to change the position of the taskbar easily. I did fix it but had to do Reg change.

It caused the explorer process to crash off and on and screen blinking. It made W11 almost inoperable.

Oh, that's very unfortunate. I hope that changes somehow with the flurry of fixes coming every week, but of course MS wouldn't consider this anything to be fixed. Maybe as an accidental byproduct.

Has this been a consistent thing from the start? I wonder if 22000.100 makes a difference.

Moving the Taskbar to the top by changing registry key doesn't seem to work in a fresh install of 22000.120
As soon as we restart the explorer, it seems to revert to the same 03, and I find that other values in the key also seem different.

When you say "seem different," you mean relative to what you noticed when? As of .100, a number of the values did change, so that's to be expected. I think this is what we should be talking about for "top," though I haven't tried it and don't know if it sticks.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3]
"Settings"=hex:30,00,00,00,fe,ff,ff,ff,7a,f4,00,00,01,00,00,00,30,00,00,00,30,\
  00,00,00,00,00,00,00,a0,02,00,00,00,05,00,00,d0,02,00,00,60,00,00,00,01,00,\
  00,00

As before, I'm still hoping the side one can work somehow.

After changing the taskbar location to top, I find that I can't right-click the network icon and see the 'network and internet settings' !
So, I reverted back to the bottom, I will wait for Windows to offer the same !

I'm running Windows 11 Build 20000.132 and tried this yesterday, and today. So far, no go.

The first thing I noticed is that in this Build, I can move the Start Menu from center to left and back to center.

I think that maybe since Microsoft has announced that it's separating Windows Explorer and the Taskbar, that something has been changed.

I followed the instructions to the letter. Nothing has worked to get my Taskbar at the top of my screen. Every time I go back to try again, StuckRects has changed back to 03.

Sigh . . . I took one more shot at it, did nothing differently, and now my Taskbar is on the top left of my monitor!

If I did anything differently, I don't have a clue what it was!

Thank goodness, since our Senior Center is closed for two weeks (one of our musicians contracted COVID and was at the Center on Monday and in ICU by Friday).

We'll have to use Skype for our Genealogy and Windows 10 classes for the next coupla weeks. When sharing a screen, Skype covers the taskbar up and students can't see which "app or file we open".

Then probably hiding the taskbar may be your better option ?

Won't work. The problem is with sharing my screen.
