I changed the user folder 5 letter name (which is the first 5 letters of my microsoft email address), and now there is a problem.

I didn't know this, but supposedly if the desktop folder is marked for backup with OneDrive, this folder (desktop folder) is moved to the OneDrive folder.

Anyway, when I log in using my Microsoft account, I get a message box on the desktop saying at the top "Location is not available". Then the message reads, "C:\Users\old name\OneDrive\Desktop is unavailable. Then there is some advice to check for finding it's location.

There are no usual apps like the Edge browser on the desktop, the only app available is the Recycle Bin app.

This is a new computer so I have not as yet installed any apps.

How can I get the new name applied to whatever this is that's causing a problem.

Can it be fixed in the Registry Editor?

Change the user folder name back to what it was - if you can. Changing it leads to problems, as you have found.

Pay particular attention to steps 14 and 15, but it's best to read the whole tutorial to make sure you didn't miss anything.

That is what I did, by way of this YouTube video:

Instead of the wmic command I used:
Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_UserAccount | Select-Object Name,SID
