in my bios for OS it said other I changed it to UEFI. It needs to be set to that to be compatible for win 11 correct? Thanks! :-)

Actually, it is not a hard constraint that PC must be UEFI compatible and it is possible with a bit of tinkering to install Windows 11 as a legacy bios installation, provided pc is legacy bios capable.

The reason things probably worked on your pc despite not setting bios to UEFI is that many pcs that are uefi and legacy bios compatible are clever enough to tell if installation is UEFI even if bios is not set to uefi and runs OS anyway.

A lot of bioses are not clever to tell the difference and refuse to run unless set to uefi.

Quite how yi

your pc allowed you to install Windows 11 without being set to UEFI does puzzle me as I would have thought it would fail the secure boot test (unless you used tool like rufus to bypass Windows 11 constraints which by context of your posts does not seem to be the case).

I believe the Windows 11 installer only checks if pc has secure boot capability, but not if it is actually switched on, and maybe your bios says it is secure boot capable regardless of whether you can use it or not?

100% true. I have several Mini PCs that report that they are Secure Boot capable but there is no ability to actually enable Secure Boot in the BIOS! Win 11 never complains about this. Of course, if MS makes Secure Boot mandatory to be enabled in the future, then I am dead in the water.

You have an ASUS motherboard. Look on the Boot tab in the BIOS.


The F7 key will shift you to advanced mode in the BIOS.

I like to look at distrowatch.com to see if anything new has been added to the list 100 'flavors' of Linux. I've got a few different bootable LiveUSB for testing/demostrating but have Linux Mint installed. The GUI on most is not extremely different from Windows or Mac and most are free so there's a lot of folks can push forward their ideas.

Credit to the Linux folks, but Linux is still too deep in the... command-speak.

I mean words like sudo and usr and dev1... etc. are just too much BS.
It's 2024... every OS can do 256 byte names now, at least.


What I "meant" in my post above, was that we need a new Windows, coded by someone besides MS.
Everything is so ad and data grabbing these days, that operating systems are just a mess.
And phones are even worse. :/

An OS should also be backwards compatible with "any" old software, the user chooses to run.
Everything should be optional and adjustable.

An OS should be a basic program that allows one to... run their programs. That's all it should be.

There are a lot variables shown such as enable CSM? I Wonder if I should set bios to default settings and se what I get? When I click secure boot I get a lot of seting options and there are 4 different keys /numbers in there. This is really confusing and I'm not sure what the CSM enable or disable is for I enabled it for now.

That's the way I have it set. I don't understand where it says secure boot state-user? I don't see any kind of options there.

I've used floppies years ago but never messed with DOS.

Just ignore all the rest of the Secure Boot junk.
In the Taskbar search box, type this: secure boot

Then you should see this...

The Settings in Windows 10 and 11 are a mess.
BUT... the one thing MS did right is that you can just type whatever setting you're looking for in the Taskbar search box.
99% of the time, this will get you to the right page in Settings.

For the pic above... I just typed: secure boot ...in the Taskbar search box.
