Hi all, I've got a Gigabyte GA-Z370-HD3 mobo and a Samsung SSD 960 EVO 256Gb hooked up to it. There is no other connecter, (Are they called M2 ports?), for a second SSD on this mobo so I'm toying with the idea of upgrading to another one. So, my questions:
Would I get faster speeds on a second SSD if the mobo had two M2? connection points?
Instead of buying/building another comp would it be better to change the mobo and perhaps up the RAM?
Upsides or downsides?
Thanks guys and/or girls (-:

Whether you upgrade or not is up to you.
If you don't "need" more... you could get a 2.5 inch SSD (SATA). They run about 550Mb/s.

Another option is just build a new up-to-date comp and keep the 8700K comp the way it is.

They also sell PCIe to NVMe adapter cards

Ofc, you could just upgrade mobo. CPU and RAM. But at the moment, that could be expensive.

This motherboard can run your current CPU and RAM... and it has 2x M.2 slots

I was checking a build for... mobo, CPU and DDR5 RAM... 32GB of DDR5 RAM in Australia, is pushing $800

Here's a Mobo, CPU RAM build, (fairly modern)...

I you'd like to upgrade to a DDR5 motherboard, I suggest that you check out RAM prices at the moment. Shocking.

There are LGA1700 (Intel Gen12, 13, and 14 CPUs) that use DDR4 RAM.

Thanks Ghot, I did have a second SSD which the computer doc fitted via a PCIe to NVMe adapter but it was no better/quicker than my internal HDD so I took it out. I looked at some prices and yikes, think I'll persevere with the old girl for a while and maybe get into a new rig next year. It was only to try for more speed playing high end games but for the required outlay.........I'll stick to solitaire!

Thanks Bobkn, I did check out prices and got a shock.......I should get out more! Consider it closed fellers, I'm staying put.

Here... this is a fairly decent game. I ran it on an AMD FX-8350 and a GTX 780Ti...

I believe with a BIOS update you can run 9th gen intel processors on your board. Also, your specs say you're at 1080p. Even at that resolution for gaming, a GTX 1060 is getting long in the tooth.

The SATA M.2 slots are 6gb/s which is almost twice as fast as your Samsung SSD 960 EVO in the m2 slot. Get a faster one for the M.2 but I dont know what the speed rating of your M.2 port is and get a new drive for the SATA as well but I thing you said you already have one.

Hard to believe the PCIe to NVMe adapter is as slow as a HDD. Sump'ns not right. Is it in the correct slot? There should be no significant speed reduction when using a PCIe to NVMe adapter, as it is a passive device that directly connects the SSD to PCIe lanes

The SATA slots are 6gb/s which is almost twice as fast as your Samsung SSD 960 EVO in the m2 slot.
It´s the other way around. The Samsung in the M.2 slot is at least twice as fast as the SATA DRIVE.

Yes, Thanks, that was a typo . . . What I meant is . . . if his M.2 port is rated at 6GB . . . his actual SSD is only capable of around 2GB/s so I recommend a FASTER SSD for the M.2 port and get an adapter and put the Samsung SSD 960 EVO in a SATA port or in the adapter he already has for the fastest PCIE slot available.

You must know, that M.2 can be SSD SATA or NVMe (faster)
Your mobo supports NVMe PCIe Gen3 native, so that would be my choice.
I just bought 2 used ( 3 years old) 256 GB Samsung for $22 each 🙂
BTW How does an PCIe adapter come in play?

I have also just upgraded a friends old PC with a used Gigabyte Z390 AORUS, 16 GB Gskill
and Intel® Core™ i7-9700K - thats pretty fast even today and support Windows 25H2, which
had been on the mobo and got a digital licence when installed.
Got it all for $224 ….
