Chrome : Multiple instances of Chrome running in Task Manager when 1 tab is open

I could have one tab open with 10 instances in Task Manager. Up to 90 with a few tabs one.

There are a lot of solutions to try on Google but none have worked for me.

Bogging down my system.

This is normal for modern browsers. This occurs because Google Chrome deliberately separates the browser, the rendering engine, and the plugins from each other by running them in separate processes.

As an example right now I have 2 Firefox tabs open. It is running 46 processes. I have 14 processes of Edge running and I do not even have the browser running. I've tried ending the Edge processes and I am not allowed to do so. Explorer locks up when I do.

I got those to stop running, but I can't remember how I done it. . lol I do know that the Microsoft Edge 3 services in services.msc are Manual, Automatic (Delayed), Manual (Triggered Start)

I'm on the latest Firefox and with one tab open, I have (10) Firefox processes in Task Manager.

The browsers are supposed to work that way.
They did this to prevent the browser from crashing when a tab or part of a web page crashes.
It also makes the browsers more secure.

Here is a description for Firefox...

There's nothing wrong. Firefox splits some browser functions into their own process for security and reliability purposes, just like other browsers. A Main Controller Process(controls the others), Tabs, Network, GPU, Web Extensions, Media Decoder, Utility, Encrypted Media Decoder, and 3 preallocated tabs(which are the smallest MB). 3rd party website resources may also be split off for isolation from the tab that called for them which can prevent the possibility of cross site attacks.

This is the very reason I tell everyone I know who have only 8gb of ram to run a minimal number of tabs they have open at one time and to curtail the number of browser add-ons they install. I would probably be bald by now if I attempted to run with 8 gb, but I know a lot of people still do.

You have clearly not bothered with the basic settings of your Edge Browser and Windows settings.
I use Edge and Chrome and no process for either runs when they are not running. That is on Windows 10 and 11.

It has already been said but with Modern Web Browsers and indeed Windows itself processes have been separated out. It helps in debugging the various parts of applications.

I you have to operate that way then what do you expect, you need an appropriate amount of RAM, for most people 5 is a lot of Browser Tabs open.

Duly chastised but unconcerned.
Each of us use our computers in different ways and set them up accordingly. Most of us also have enough computer resources available to handle whatever background processes Windows uses as well as those of any app or browser add-on we choose to add. Also, some of us(me)decide to not worry too much about being lean and mean and feel it's best to just let Windows do it's thing it's way until such time as it interferes with the performance of our system or the way we use it. We change what settings affects us and leave the rest alone.

Even though this thread is old, I currently have 37 anime tabs open (combo of japanese and chinese), a few LinkedIn, Gmail, and 121 chrome processes

@Try3 - there is a huge memory eat-up in task manager because of this. Is there a solution for reducing the amount of memory that Google Chrome consumes regardless the amount of inactive tabs?

Yeah you can reduce it by not having 37 tabs open at the same time.Just because a tab is inactive doesn't mean it doesn't have open processes and use memory. Add-ons also open Chrome processes.
