Yeah, that's a bit much just to clear a BIOS. There's gotta be some odd reason for that. Simply clicking a clear CMOS switch or removing the battery is all I've ever needed to do.

So very true. unfortunately none of my Gigabyte boards have one. Not to mean no Gigabyte boards have them, just that none of mine do. Including my 4 & 5 hundred dollar boards :(

Ahh, David Letterman.

I've been of a mind to do that with more than one laptop - but this Dell takes the cake in terms of idiocracy, for sure.

I tried the alt and f4 keys - that did not work but I tried several other key combinations - found one the windows key and the pause/break key it gave me more options - have not got it to work yet but it is worth a try

I followed the clean install tutorial and it progresses OK until I get to the point of where it tries to get me connected. I have cable internet and I have shut the modem off. First, it recognizes internet from my neighbors about 200 feet down the road. I type in any passwords and it obviously cannot connect. I have no other options. It just sets there. Oh...it tells me to use another device and check aka.ms/networksetup. I don't have another device. Is there a workaround for this? I reread the turotial but it doesn't work on this computer. I think I have my computer listed in my profile. It has worked before. Maybe I need to wipe the drive completely before I attempt to run setup again? Thanks for anyones help.

I had problems installing on an HP unsupported laptop in that it couldn't find my wifi as well (but found my neighbour's mobile wifi). It seemed to accept/find mobile internet. So I turned my iphone into a wifi hotspot - the install found the iphone wifi and I installed that way. After install it found the wifi fine.

In your case, it might have been a driver issue - your home Wi-Fi might be running on a different frequency (5 GHz versus 2.4 GHz) and perhaps your laptop can, in install mode, only see 2.4 GHz, until it loads a driver, at which point it can see a 5 GHz band. But when you created a hotspot, it may have either picked a 2.4 GHz connection, or created a hotspot across both 2.4 and 5, thus allowing the laptop to see it during install.

But, yeah, this is something that Microsoft may have also thought of when they insisted on newer hardware, to try to weed out older wireless connections that may have issues when connecting during install. Not saying they actually did that, but it is possible....

At any rate, though, since you got it working, it's all good. And good thinking on your part to realize it saw your neighbor's mobile, so try your own mobile's hotspot.
