Clone HDD then upgrade to windows 11 and dual boot Windows 10 possible?

I'd like to try out windows 11 on my main system to make sure all my software, apps etc. are able to run, so I'm thinking of dual booting 10 & 11.
However to save some time, rather than installing a fresh 11 installation and adding all my apps, I was wondering if it was possible to clone my 10 partition then upgrade that to 11 while still keeping my original 10 installation?

Would there be any complications?

Everything is doable with Windows 11 and whatever way you want to install it. Issues depend from hardware to hardware. Some of your apps may not work properly and may need updated drivers from software devs.
Remember that Win 11 is not yet released and software devs are not aware of any possible issues unless it is reported to them.
Don't forget to create your image backup before doing anything.

For my System Two in 'My Computers' below I replaced its HDD with a spare and restored a copy of the original from a Macrium system image, then upgraded from 10 to 11. After a while I thought it would be useful to dual boot its original W10 for comparisons. So restored the W10 image again, this time to a .vhxd virtual drive, and used this tutorial....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Just one more question, I assume I have to enrol in the windows insider program to upgrade to windows 11. But if I do that on my cloned 10 partition, will my main original 10 partition be on the insider program and get updated to?

Not necessarily. You could also use UUPDUMP to get a script to build a Windows 11 .ISO and upgrade yourself. See this tutorial.

As for the separate instances - it should not put the cloned instance into the Insider program.

No, I'm not an Insider. I used UUPDump to make the ISO, as johnlgalt says. I mounted it in W10 and ran Setup to start the upgrade.

Definitely.. another way of cloning an OS. But you have to setup the partition properties to extend it and occupy the entire drive if the image came from smaller capacity drive.

I have Win 10 on a 500GB SSD. So I bought another 500GB SSD.

Then, I made a backup of the "disk" of the original 500GB SSD, then restored that disk backup to the new 500GB SSD.
Then I upgraded Win 10 to Win 11 on the new SSD. Just use the Boot Menu, to pick the Win 10 or Win 11 SSD.

Another way would be to make a full OS image backup, and put that on another partition on the Windows drive.
Then just upgrade the new Windows 10 to Windows 11.
A little diskpart shenanigans and you would be dual booting Win 10 and Win 11.


Another way, would be to take an old unused Win 7/8/8.1 key and do a clean install of Win 10 (using the old key), on another partition of your Windows 10 drive. Then upgrade the Win 10 install to Win 11.
The use diskpart to make it into dual boot.

I'd modify that to say Win11 Preview. We still don't know if everyone will be able to once it is RTM and then goes gold.
