Solved Compatibility issue with program created for Windows XP

Hi,
I have a program called Kirby Alarm Pro which I use daily and find indispensable, especially as nothing with similar functionality is available. Although it was designed for Win XP, it ran faultlessly in Windows 10 thanks to the compatibility troubleshooter, however, since updating to Windows 11, it no longer displays its alarms. Instead I get a grey screen even after setting the compatibility to Win XP.

Is there anything else I can do to make it display correctly, please?

Thanks for your suggestions. I already tried all settings from previous O/S versions to no avail. I just uninstalled and then reinstalled using Win 7 compatibility but the problem persists.

Instructions on how to download and install the Windows ADK

and installing 'Application Compability Tools'.

Run 'Compatibility Administrator (32-bit)' and add your application to the database.
There's an option there to specify different settings.

I would right-click on the Setup and select Properties. Then go in Compatibility tab and check Windows XP SP3 compatibility AND Run as Administrator. To make sure it always works that way, I would do that for all users, not only the current user. Then run Setup and install the application. Then go to the application folder find all executables (.EXE, make sure you don't hide known extensions to see it) and set them all to Windows XP SP3 compatibility AND Run as Administrator. This should work.

Most old programs and games should work this way. For the stubborn ones that demand Windows XP, you can install Windows XP in a virtual machine (Hyper-V, VMware player, VirtualBox) and install them there. You shouldn't notice any performance difference if you allocate enough RAM and the game is not very demanding.

I also have Kirby alarm and had no issues under Win 11 23h2.
When I've upgraded to 24h2 I found the same problem (blank screen)
A simple way to make it show properly was to do a search (icon on the menu)

In fact, the problem returned and, like you, I discovered that selecting Alarm > Find and then clicking on the Cancel button would populate the tables. I will try your workaround next time I reboot.

Out of interest, I have another issue with KAP. When starting Windows 10, KAP always launched in the system tray and worked perfectly. Since updating to Win 11 24H2, KAP appears on the desktop at start up and is always in a non-responsive state. This forces me to open Task Manager and kill the task, then reopen the program. Do you experience the same thing?

Simply remove it from Startup applications (disable) and add it in the Startup folder instead. See if that works:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Otherwise just manually load it when you need it, not at startup.

It is already in the startup folder, however it appears twice in the startup applications although the entry with spaces seems odd because the only executable in the Kirby Alarm Pro folder is kirbyalarmpro.exe. Should I disable both?

I must have it start with Windows because it is often programmed to run tasks at launch, and most importantly, I am extremely likely to forget to launch it manually which could have catastrophic consequences. This program is literally indispensable to me.

Try disabling the first and leave the second. What happens? Then try disabling the second and enabling the first. See if that makes any difference. Have you set Compatibility to Windows XP SP3 and Run as Administrator in the application Compatibility settings?

My Kirby Alarm Pro is version 5.01. QuicktellPro what is your version?
I have a link to D:\Programs\Kirby\kirbyalarmpro.exe on C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup (Yes I've installed Kirby on my D: drive)
Under Task manager I only see one task: Kirby Alarm Pro (32)

It is possible that, in another way a second link is executed.
If you close both (Kirbyalarmpro and Kirby alarm pro) and go to the Kirby folder and execute Kirbyalarmpro.exe, what shows up on task manager, Kirbyalarmpro or Kirby alarm pro?

I wrote to Ian Cook (author of Kirby alarm) asking some questions and he sent me the kirbyalarmprosetup_v4.45.exe installation file and a Registration code for V4.45. He also sent me KirbyAlarmUpdateVersion501.zip, a patch to 5.01

Yes, compatibility was set to Win XP SP3. After disabling the second startup entry, it now launches at boot without crashing on the desktop. Thank you for having solved that. Nonetheless, as pointed out by Megahertz, the blank screen issue only happened with the update to 24H2 meaning Windows is the cause.

I'm running v5.02. If you want a copy, send me a PM and I will put it on my server for you. You should know that, just as with v5.01, it is just a load of files which you paste into the installation folder. Quite frankly, I really have no idea what the difference is. Perhaps you could mail Ian for more info about that?
