Solved Copilot now wants me to log in w/ an Account!!

I've been using Copilot for quite q while now and never had to "log in". But tonight, when I had it opened I clicked on one of the buttons that was listed on the Copilot interface, "Learn Something New" was its label. And what appeared was a Copilot log on page to sign in with either a Microsoft account or using Google and Apple. Well, I don't want to log into anything, I just want to make a query like I've done dozens of times. So I closed it and reopened Copilot and I can't get rid of this Log in page! I shut down the computer, restarted it and opened Copilot and still get this Sign In page. How can I get the Ask a Question interface and not have to log in!!

I'm using a local account to use Windows 11. build 8894.

Copilot has required signing in for more than a year. (That's what Copilot says anyway.)

EDIT: Or perhaps it's only been that way for several months. Copilot can't quite decide.

Interesting discussion, but it looks like they don't have a solution.

A few months ago I deleted Copilot through Revo and now mysteriously it has recently reappeared again in the Windows Apps list when I was looking for something else in there. It must have been installed through some update, so it looks like I'm going to have to monitor what appears in Revo more often than I used to.

Well . . . I thought I was logging in on a Local Account, but I have set the ASUS and the HP Spectre machines with Microsoft accounts. I forgot about that. So that is why I was surprised to find that using my Dell laptop I was greeted with the Copilot sign in! Silly me!! That laptop I DID sign up with a local account.

I always use CP logged in which then stores your chat sessions, useful if you need to return to a topic

I don't use Copilot, but out of curiosity I clicked on the colorful icon at the taskbar to see it. The first thing I noticed was a toggle to "Start Copilot at login screen to keep it handy". Of course I switched it off and closed Copilot. So it might be a way to restore Copilot at its default settings, make it ask you again and switch off that option to start at login screen. I went in Settings, Apps, Installed apps and checked, there is only a modify and uninstall option. Try uninstalling Copilot and reinstall it. I would use Revo Uninstaller to wipe any leftover data before reinstalling.

Looks like a marketing strategy; First for free as a guest to sniff on things, later on logging in with an account so they can keep track on things. The next step; paying for this "service". Personally I never use Copilot's functions. Dead weight. You can remove some of it, but once you're not looking it is back because MS finds CoPilot is a part of Windows. (Update Windows. Update is thinking that your system is broken and "repairs" it.) User @cheaterslick already has noticed this.

Since I don't have a MS Store account, I'd have no way of logging into the Store and changing those settings using Option 1, so I'd have to use Option 2 or Option 3 in order to block it. Option 2 looks like the easiest so I will go for that one for now. I may deal with the Group Policy Editor in the future should Option 2 not work or get overwritten ...

This still works, for me anyway. Open Edge browser

On upper right click on Chat (Ctrl+Shift+.) and the sidebar Chat dialog will open with no sign in (for now anyway)

Why does Copilot now require a log in?

Copilot now appears to require a login because Microsoft quietly changed how the service is delivered — and the shift affects all entry points (copilot.com, the Windows app, mobile apps, and embedded versions like Edge/Bing). The change isn’t arbitrary; it’s tied to feature access, data protection rules, and account‑based entitlements.

The short answer
Copilot requires sign‑in because Microsoft moved the service to an account‑based model.
Signing in unlocks features (chat history, longer conversations, more image generation, voice), enforces licensing rules, and enables enterprise data protection.

Why Microsoft made the switch
1. Copilot features are now tied to your account
Microsoft explicitly states that signing in gives access to:

Chat history

More image creation

Longer conversations

Longer voice usage

Other account‑gated features

Anonymous mode doesn’t provide these, so the service pushes you toward sign‑in.

2. Enterprise and Microsoft 365 Copilot require identity
For work/school users, Copilot Chat requires:

A Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) login

Licensing checks

Enterprise data protection (EDP)

Even the free web‑grounded Copilot Chat inside Microsoft 365 apps requires sign‑in so the system knows whether you’re entitled to the “web” or “work” mode.

3. The consumer Copilot (copilot.com) also moved to account‑based access
Microsoft’s support page says you can sign in with:

Apple ID

Google Account

This is new — Copilot used to allow full anonymous use. Now, anonymous mode is limited or hidden depending on browser/app.

Why you are seeing the login requirement
Based on your earlier messages:

When you weren’t signed in, Copilot gave you PDFs automatically.

After signing in (to upload an image), the interface switched to the “full” Copilot Pages mode.

That mode requires sign‑in and hides anonymous features.

This matches Microsoft’s documented behavior: signing in changes the feature set and UI.

The bottom line
Copilot now requires login because Microsoft unified the service under account‑based access for:

Anonymous mode still exists, but it’s limited and not exposed in all browsers.

So it's saying, "We gave you a taste, now we want to connect the data to you personally"

Now mind I am signed in to Edge currently, but it works when not signed in, for me anyway. Even when signed in clicking the Copilot icon upper left brings up the sign in page

But the Chat upper right still opens the sidebar chat

As far as I understand, if you use a local Administrator account and haven't ever login to Copilot, you can just postpone, for the time being, the prompt to login and just use it without the search history and all these features. However, if you use a Microsoft account in Windows or have login to Copilot at least once, then you are asked to login every time, you cannot avoid it. The solution would be to uninstall it, convert your Microsoft account to local Administrator account and then reinstall it. Or just ignore it and use the online version, if that still doesn't require to login.

PS: If you have login to Microsoft Edge, you don't need to login again to the online version of Copilot, your credentials are automatically used.

Yeah but if you're signed into Edge, doesn't that mean you're signed into Windows 11 OS as a whole? No more local user account log in?

(head smack) totally missed that one and that looks like the best solution since it directly targets the Microsoft Store updater.

Will Option Four also work in Windows 10?

Not necessarily. I have a local Administrator account and I am signed only to specific Store apps and games, including Microsoft Edge. When using your Microsoft account on an app or game you are asked if you want to connect your Microsoft account to Windows (convert the local account to Microsoft account) or use it so sign-in to this app/game only. I always select the second option to keep using my local Administrator account on Windows.

I am on 10

And as I say, for me it works when not signed in to Edge. My 10 does not have a Microsoft account

They are the same reg patch. So either one will work on Win 11 or Win 10.
