Purchased a Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 (14", Gen 10) for my son to use at school.

I log in with my MS account as Administrator and install all updates available through Windows Update.
I add my son's MS account as a user ([email protected])

Go to Sign In

Get Wait A Moment

MS Enter password dialog displays

Enter password and select sign in

Dialog displays "You'll need the Internet for this. It doesn't look like you're connected to the Internet. Check your connection and try again."

Problem - this appears while connected to the internet

a) on standard home wifi
b) hotspotting off my phone's 4G connection
c) connected by USB dock with ethernet connection to the router.

I have tried updating the DNS to use 8.8.8.8

Nothing working so far.

I can create a local account which works in that it creates an account to get into the PC, but I really need him to be able to use his outlook account.

On the local account if I try to log into MS services (Office, OneDrive) I get various errors including "You'll need the Internet for this. It doesn't look like you're connected to the Internet. Check your connection and try again." and 0x80190001, which I understand to be a generic account issue.

OK, I think I figured out the problem.

This is a MS account issue - I was unable to log into outlook.com with the account on another device, receiving the error message :

Please retry with a different device, use a VPN, or other authentication method to sign in. For more details, please see Error 400 when signing in - Microsoft Support

Other devices didn't work, but strangely the VPN did.

On the new laptop I installed Windscribe VPN and connected to a location in my home state while on my Administator account.

Without logging out, I switched to the second account - I was then able to log in as normal and set up a PIN.

I was then able to disable Windscribe on the Administrator and log in on the second account with my normal internet connection.

Commenting here as there is nothing worse than seeing my problem elsewhere with a follow up of "Don't worry, fixed it" without any detail.

Hopefully this may help someone else.
