OS
Win 11
Right now I have the latest version of Win11 as of yesterday: Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.6584)

Since upgrading from Win10 to Win11 yesterday I just discovered my Copy and Paste is not functioning. I have done the following tests and some others:
1. Did a restart...it did not help
2. Ensured my Clipboard was empty
3. Ensured no video was open
4. Used Drive easy app to update all my drivers
5 And tried other workarounds that I cannot remember right now

I rely tremendously a lot on this feature and absolutely need some help.

Thank you
Tegiro

Hi, Tegiro.

Run SFC and RestoreHealth & try restarting the clipboard service
  • I have added the command lines below to code that if you click on, will copy to the clipboard, I’d be interested to know if you can paste it
  • Try both Right click & Paste, as well as Control + V (paste)
To restart the clipboard service:
Open powershell (Terminal) as Admin.
Paste the following and press enter. (Or type as the copy/paste may not work)
Not sure if you’ll need to reboot

Get-Service -Name "Clipboard" | Restart-Service

Run SFC and DISM

Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Press Windows + X and choose Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin)
- Alternatively, search for cmd, right-click it, and select Run as administrator

Run System File Checker (SFC)
- Type the following and press Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for the scan to complete This can take 10–20 minutes or less depending on your system.

Run DISM RestoreHealth
- Type the following and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- This may take 10–30 minutes depending on your system health and internet speed

Re-run SFC (Optional but Recommended)
- After DISM completes, run SFC again:
sfc /scannow

If the above fails to fix the issue:

Create a temporary new user account. Tell us if the same problem occurs. You can delete it after the test.
Just to find out if this is profile based and only tied to your current profile/account.

Hello antspants,
Thank you very much for the suggested help you have provided.
Sadly, none of the suggested fixes resolved my problem.
Please view the attached photo showing the processes I went through.
The "Get-Service... "did not work.

I'm not sure about creating a temporary new user file. I'm bit "scared" to try this:(

PS: I have a MS Surface Pro Tablet running on Win 11 and have no problems with Copy and Paste on this device.

Cheers,
Tegiro

Run that in Powershell not command prompt and the name Antspants gave is incorrect.

You want the Clipboard User Service_"random number" service.

You will have to look in services to see what random number is assigned to yours on the end.

Mine is Clipboard User Service_7bd61

For me command would be:
get-service -name "Clipboard User Service_7bd61" | restart-service

Your number on the end will be different.

How mine looks and should be set for automatic delayed start:

Your screenshot is a Command Prompt (Admin). That is a Powershell command, as @antspants explained....

Open powershell (Terminal) as Admin.
Paste the following and press enter. (Or type as the copy/paste may not work)
Not sure if you’ll need to reboot

Get-Service -Name "Clipboard" | Restart-Service

Am I missing something in the process?

When I searched restart the service that’s what I found. Sorry that I was wrong.

This will restart clipboard services (I tried it) but you can't copy paste and if you try to type it, the likelihood of mistyping are pretty high.
Code:
$services = Get-Service -Name "cbdhsvc_*" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

if ($services) {

    $services | Restart-Service

    Write-Output "Clipboard services restarted."

} else {

Write-Output "No matching cbdhsvc_* services found."

}

So lets be conventional:

  • Open Services Manager
    • Press [Win] + [R], type services.msc, and hit [Enter]

  • Locate the Clipboard Service
    • Scroll through the list of services.
    • Look for a service named Clipboard User Service_xxxxx (the suffix may vary).
Win-1911.webp

  • Restart the Service
    • Right-click on the Clipboard User Service.
    • Select Restart from the context menu.

  • Test Clipboard Functionality
    • Try copying and pasting again.
    • Press [Win] + [V] to check if clipboard history is working.

If that doesn't work, and assuming you ran SFC & RestoreHealth, I would recommend that you do a Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade

Please read this tutorial through and then go back to the beginning and follow/perform the tutorial.
You really should have a system image that you can restore to if you have problems. I am not sure that you would have.

So all I can do is point you to the process and hope it works for you.
If you follow this properly, you wont lose anything, it will just do a repair.
If your system is Windows 11 compatible, use "Option One"

Used Drive easy app to update all my drivers

P.S. Not many of us here advise using driver managers.

Hi antspants,
I tried your first option and it seemed to help...somewhat.
For instance I can copy and past "Files" to Word's new document.
However if I try to past that same "File" to a new yahoo email body it pastes the "file" content as opposed to just the file name itself....strange.
So far, I can live with this glitches.

I have used Drive Easy and updated 22 drivers yesterday.

As I've been working all day on this I find my head is swimming, so I will give it a rest for today and come back later to try mores fixes.
Thanks again for your expert help.

PS: As this is a MS problem I wish they would fix this problem themselves! IMHO!

Yahoo (for instance) might behave differently than Word, although you would think it shouldn’t

Try pasting into Notepad, then copy that and paste the text from Notepad into a Yahoo email.

Whoa.... I cannot paste to Notepad! Arrgggh!!!!!
What is going on with Win 11?
I'm beginning to regret this upgrade.

Ok, I copied a file from my Word folder
I opened Notepad
Tried to paste this file by Ctl-V, no go! (Could not see anywhere a "paste" icon) Only appeared greyed out if I clicked in Note Pad.
I type gibberish into Notepad, highlighted the info and right clicked in Note Pad.
Screen appeared where I could copy the highlighted text, then I selected paste (which now appeared...not greyed out) and pasted it below itself.
WOW!
Regardless....I cannot copy a file, paste it into Note Pad, then copy it from Note Pad and try to paste it in Yahoo mail.

What is wrong with MS Win11?????

It sounds like something is clearing or blocking the clipboard.
Do you have some security, password manager or privacy application running?
