Apps Copy Text on Screen using Text Extractor in Snipping Tool app in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to copy any text on your screen to the clipboard using the Text Extractor feature in the Snipping Tool app in Windows 11.

Starting with Snipping Tool (version 11.2503.27.0) for Windows Insiders in the Canary, Dev, and Release Preview (11.2503.29.0) Channels, Microsoft is adding text extractor in the Snipping Tool capture bar – designed to minimize the number of steps it takes to copy text to your clipboard without having to take a screenshot of your screen.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26120.4151 (Beta 24H2), build 26200.5603 (Dev 24H2), and build 27898.1000 (Canary), Microsoft is making it easier to jump directly into text extractor via Win + Shift + T. You should be on Snipping Tool version 11.2503.29.0 or higher as well.

Here's How:

1 Perform either action below when there's text on your screen you want to copy:
  • Press the Win :win: + Shift + S keys to open the Snipping Tool capture bar.
  • Open the Snipping Tool app.
2 Click/tap on the Text Extractor button on the toolbar. (see screenshots below)

3 If wanted, click/tap on the More options (3 dots) button, and click/tap on Automatically copy text and/or Remove line breaks to check (on) or uncheck (off - default) them for what you want. (see screenshot below)

Automatically copy text will automatically copy all text in your selection region directly to your clipboard.

Remove line breaks will remove line breaks from copied text.

4 Select the region on your screen you would like to scan for text. (see screenshot below)

5 If you wanted to quickly copy all text in your selection region, perform either action below: (see screenshot below)
  • Click/tap on Copy all text in the toolbar.
  • Press the Ctrl + A keys to select all text, and Ctrl + C keys to copy all selected text.

6 If you wanted to copy specific text in your selection region: (see screenshot below)
  1. Select (highlight) the text you want to copy.
  2. Click/tap on the Copy text button, or press Ctrl + C keys.

7 You can now Paste (Ctrl+V) the copied text where you like.

Apparently Microsoft have removed it in the latest Snipping tool for the Release Channel, 11.2509.30.0, now it has Quick mark-up instead.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.
