Copying Partitions

Yesterday, I wanted to copy an EFI partition from drive 0 to drive 1 and I was using V12.6 of Minitool Partition Wizard Free and I had forgotten that you cannot do this as you need a paid version. They wanted $59 for the paid version.

So I was about to download Easeus Partition Manager and then I realised I could do it for free and very easily with good old Macrium Reflect.

People are often under the illusion that you can only clone a complete drive to another overwriting all data on source drive. This is not the case - you can clone a single partition to any drive that has adequate unallocated space.

oops - updated but I bet you knew really ha ha.
I actually didn't, and I didn't realize copying partitions in MiniTool was a paid feature now, it used to be free.

Yeah, you can backup and restore a partition to anywhere with macrium as long as there is space.

But it is a shame that the paid Minitool partition wizard is so costly - and it is not perpetual. I used to own a paid version as I needed some functionality but when the support expired I balked at paying that premium again.

Are you absolutely sure that copy partition requires a paid version of minitool partition wizard?

The copy partition wizard is active in my free 12.6 version, and I can select the partition I want to copy and get to the next step of selecting where I want to copy it to, but I don't have any disk with free space to try it. I would think the wizard would be grayed out and non-functional if it were not available in the free version.

It's only after you select the destination and then click apply what it comes up and tells you that function is only available in the paid version.

An EFI System partition is so easy to create and make bootable, it is more trouble to copy one to a new drive than it is to just create a new on the new drive.

How do you do that in 50 words or less? Does it involve diskpart?

I find it odd that people will pay £60 - £70 for a game providing 10 - 30 hours entertainment on average but balk at the idea of paying less for keeping their precious data safe, in a convenient manner. The number of posts we see on various forums asking for "free file recovery software" comes to mind, usually followed by the obligatory "I have no backup" "I can't afford to loose these files" sort of comments.
If your data is actually important to you then for your own sanity make backups and consider a paid recovery/ backup solution if you are not the sort to grasp the technical side of D.I.Y solutions, and if you must try it yourself at least go to a forum to ask for advice before having a go and possibly making things worse.

I avoid diskpart. Just thinking about using it makes me nervous. :)

Twice I have used the free Macrium V8 to clone one disk to another, at least under certain conditions. My disks have two partitions that contain a Windows OS installation. The first OS partition on the destination disk seems to work okay. Apparently Macrium fixes the OS partition letter (probably C) to point to the destination partition.

But it doesn't fix the partition letter of the second OS. I fix that with the Partition Saving program.

Has anyone else noticed this?

It is a 24 year old DOS program, or at least it started out that way. It can do a lot of things that are probably done easier with newer software. What I use it for is to fix the partition letter after a Windows partition is copied to another location. I've used it dozens of times on my old BIOS MBR computers. I'm still learning about doing this on these new EFI SecureBoot computers, but it seems to work.

If you want to use the partition-saving program, here are the clicks;

Run spartw64.exe using "Run as administrator" (assuming you have 64 bit windows)

Select "Update Windows 2000/xp/Vista/Seven registry.
Select the destination drive.
Select partition where the clone Windows is installed.
Select folder where clone windows is installed (probably Windows)
select the destination drive again.
select the partition where clone windows is installed again.
select the line that starts with the desired letter. (probably c, and probably the first line)
click yes (make the change)
click no (no more changes)

Boot up and enjoy.

Note again, I'm new to the EFI Secure Boot stuff. This program works great on my old computers. It seems to work on my new SecureBoot computers.
