Custom Icons for Windows 11 Thread (Folders, Dropbox, Google Drive, Podcasts, NVME Drive, Steam, Adobe)

I don't have Game and Link folders (I don't use them, and I have deleted them). Can you up an SS? Maybe I could check it out on my system.

It concerns the folders Contacts, Favorites, Links, Saved Games and Searches as shown here.

Notice how these mentioned folders have regular folder icons in Normal size?

Notice how these mentioned folders have regular folder icons in Normal size?
Those folders have different icon designs for their different sizes (in most cases, they have just two different designs). Explorer shows those folder icons (the user's folders) based on your view mode (Extra large icons, Large icons, Medium icons, Small icons, List, Details, Tiles, Content).

Extra large icons: 256 px
Large icons: 96 px
Medium icons: 48 px
Small icons: 16
List: 16 px
Details: 16 px
Tiles: 48 px
Content: 32 px

For example: The Download folder has two different designs (from 16-32 px with just a green arrow, from 40-256 px a green folder with a white arrow on it). Smaller sizes (smaller than 40px) use the green arrow icon (because the Download folder would be more distinguishable just by that green arrow in small sizes). Larger sizes (larger than 32 px) use the green folder (with a white arrow on it) design (because the Download folder would be more distinguishable by that green folder in large sizes).

But I'm not talking about the colored folders such as the Downloads folder.

I am talking about the yellow folders (Contacts, Favorites, Links, Saved Games and Searches). In Large size these yellow folders show icons inside them, but in Normal size they do not. It's weird because one should be able to distinguish these icons even on Normal size.

Are you experiencing the same for these yellow folderse? Do they have icons in them or not in Normal size for you?

@JohnnyGui,

I hoped the small size rework I did would suit you, as you told me you liked it.
I made them specially for this case, logos on folders show up in any size.
You can distinguish most of all of them, even on the 16px formats.

small-folders-rework-png.29756

I corrected and replaced the 2 or 3 uncomplete icons a while ago, so everything's updated on MEGA.

niivu also made color collections with displaying logo on folders in 256/64/48/40 formats, and their simple icon with no folder in 32/24/20/16.
Though, the logos may not always be identical to the 11 ones nor match the color of the folder it belongs to.
(separate icons from packs are available in the same folder to download /DeviantArt login required).

The methods I joined with the reworked folders are ment for customizing your own "ordinary" personal created folders, which icons can also be read by the system in "Dynamic Libraries", the way it does with the real system ones.

In your case, what you need to do is replace the existing system folder icons.

Various methods have been discussed lately on a few threads here you surely came across.
The free CustomizerGod & Winaero Tweaker apps encounter issues that have often been reported, but could still work depending on your OS version/build.

Paid app Stardock IconPackager seems to be the most reliable one (but is surprisingly announced for 7 to 10 compatibility /?)

I do it manually, with ResourceHacker and Windows Offline :

Good Luck !

Hi @Fenhl

Apologies for not giving news for a while.
Some folders of yours are still in preparation, but I have a lot of work behind with updating the remaining old W10 icons.
I had to search and classify so many system files, as well as lots of info about building icon themes with several apps.
It's a hard task for a beginner like me, but I feel I'm making headways and that there's not that much left to achieve it now.

I had Globe/web folders nearly ready a while, but didn't feel in a rush to post it as you had received @Valer's one.
The style used is different, it is actually an icon from this thread originally (made by @Lucas North & @IownAmoneyPit /v0).
I found it fit nicely the colors of the logo example you showed (v1), and maybe better with the 2 other globes (v3 & v4).
Hope it can still be useful to you or to anyone else.

I'm trying new things for the other ones, and will try send you something nice that was worth waiting.

What do you think about these -unfinished- ones ?
Tell me if the style is in your expectations or what I should change.

Hi @TizianoMad! Absolutely no need to apologize.

I think I prefer @Valer's globe icon over yours, the simpler design works better for it imo. The Magic icon looks good though! I like the version without text the most. Don't have anything to add there.

I admit I haven't scrolled back to see the full conversation or question, but I think I know what you are asking because I was having trouble finding the folders I was looking for because only the largest icon size would show the image on the folder. Therefore, when I looked under the "customize icon" area, no matter what file I pulled, I couldn't find them. That's because Windows doesn't show it in the smaller versions (even though it's completely possible). I'm not sure if it's laziness on their part or what, but it did make it difficult to find. They are there, but you have to guess until you find the one you want. And if you are wanting to use a smaller size (like list view) you will have to manually create a new icon from the biggest one. I apologize if someone already gave you the answer, or if I have completely gone off track of what you were asking.

Example: This is the original Windows 11 icon for the saved games folder. Only the largest icon will show the actual the controller image though. You can see the other sizes (left) all are blank.

Game Orig.png

As you can see from the downloaded icons, it actually falls under the "imageres.dll" but looking to the right you will not be able to tell which one it is. Thanks Microsoft!

Screenshot 2022-09-20 233942.png

An example of something you can do fairly easily with a program like Icofx is to punch it up a little with color, and then create the icon file. This will automatically create the smaller versions I believe you are looking for (left side). Also, you could simply recreate the original icon based off the largest one, and it will do the same thing, giving you the same result on the left of that original image. Hope that makes sense LOL.

Not sure if anyone has done one of these yet, so I apologize if I'm overstepping. I've only been making personalized icons for about 4 months now, so mine might be cheesy, but thought maybe someone else might like it. I grew up in the era of 3.5" Floppy Disks (Well really, I started with 5 1/4" with my Commodore 64) but I digress...

Windows has a few Floppy icons, but there wasn't really one for a folder. I did what I thought looked decent. Feel free to use it if you'd like. I did 2 versions. One where even the smaller icons in the Navigation Pane are the same as the folder (v2), and another where the smaller icons are the actual disk so they fit better with the other smaller icons (v1).

Thank you @3rd0f5

They are nearly ready, it took a while in fact.
I had to deal with a rotten virus this week, redirecting Google search engine. 🤬

I actually reworked the main template several times and have finally something which rightly fits general folder customization. I just have to adjust a few last details and it will be all good.

As this thread's quite big, you need to take your time and pay attention when scrolling, as there's a lot of content and information (you'll maybe notice a few posts are about the same things).

The complete collection of the thread is shared on OneDrive & GitHub.
The "User Folder" set I remade for small formats is available in its final version on Mega.

Have a nice exploration, and hope you can find nice creations that can suit you in this thread so far.
See you soon.

I made a set of coloured library folder icon. I made this collection for my folders (I share it here, maybe someone likes it). I tried to match the colours with the colour of my colourized folder icon set.

BTW, can somebody upload the "Image File Type" icon(s) here (Windows 11 native icon)?

I've had that virus! It's a nasty one for sure. I was lucky to catch it on all 3 of my browsers, Chrome, Edge, & Firefox.

Thanks for the tips! I figured a lot has been covered already. I'm working my way backwards but only on page 41 or so. I keep going through pages 2-3 times because something pops out at me that I overlooked. Already had to go back and delete a few posts because I found the answers by simply reading LOL.

I appreciate this thread a lot, as this is a big interest of mine :)
Thanks!

Nice work! I'm excited to try the User Folder set you remade.

Edit: ah, I noticed that when the icons get smaller, they don't transform into their standalone icons like in native Windows anymore. Not bad for standardizing across the different kinds of folders I suppose, but I personally prefer vanilla Windows behavior (although would prefer custom standalone icons / sans-folder for the normal colored folders).
