Custom Icons for Windows 11 Thread (Folders, Dropbox, Google Drive, Podcasts, NVME Drive, Steam, Adobe)

But the original .ico is actually a 128x128 image - and yet, it almost 10x larger.

My screenshot from before, only now in file details mode (the ones inside the red are the image downloads):

Screenshot 2023-11-09 121509.png

The dimensions and file sizes in KB illustrate what @atinfo was referring to - even though, dimensionally, the .ico files are smaller, they have a ton more data in them (larger in size) - and that lack of the information can translate poorly when you attempt to use it as an icon in some situations.

The one part I do understand, being an audiophile, is that JPG image compression is a lossy compression, meaning you lose original information when an image type is converted to jpg. I don't know about webp, and atinfo can probably fill in the gaps and correct me if I am wrong - but it is extremely rare for a file to be converted to JPG and not lose data.

Sometimes
Always! Apology, but You are wrong!

one came as webp and the other as jpg.
11F server/host just changes the extension name (from WebP to JPG) to bypass some apps' error that doesn't recognize the WebP extension but can read its data if you change the extension!

being an audiophile..
I'm also an audiophile! Actually I'm crazy about audio!

JPG image compression is a lossy compression
Exactly! JPG, JPEG, and WebP are lossy compression methods. They work like MP3 in audio (32, 64, 128, 256, 320 kbps) and have ABR, CBR and also VBR quality (in the image world they call it interlaced and progressive). It means you can change the compression size and method when you are trying to convert a PNG (with full-colour data and no compression) to a JPG. PNG is like FLAC/WAV (RAW audio with no compression) with the full-colour data of every pixel.

JPG vs WebP is like MP3 vs M4A/MPEG 4 layer audio (apple MP3 compression method). As you know, it's an MP3 alternative because it reduces the file size more, with less data loss! WebP does the same.
M4A = More audio clarity/data with less data size!
WebP = More pixel data with less data size

JPG vs PNG:

s5.png

11F even doesn't support its WebP images I saved (when I try to upload those images for a post):

The "ico" extension isn't anything special. It's simply a container (like MP4/MKV) for images of various sizes.

That would indicate both should have a similar header, then right?

the webp image header shows RIFFX WEBP. No mention of JFIF.

The JPG image header shows JFIF. No mention of RIFFX nor WEBP.

Though, I am using Firefox as my browser of choice, and it could also be Firefox changing something on their side - but when I go back to the posts with the images, one is definitely showing as webp and the other is definitely showing as .JPG. Interestingly enough, though, the actual filenames are both .JPG:

Now, this part I can correlate much more with my understanding of audio files, as I'm a hardcore .FLAC file user lol. But I'm glad I'm not wrong about .JPG being lossy - that woulda been rather silly looking if I had been lol.

Both images are in WebP format. I downloaded the images from the screenshot links you provided (my screenshots!) and uploaded them to "Hexed.it". The result:

s6.png

Both file headers show WebP. Each image file extension has a unique signature that starts with a special number. For instance, PNG files start with 89 and WebP files start with 52. Similarly, audio files also have signatures that can be used to identify them. Waveform data in music tracks contain signatures that can be used to identify the track name and other metadata. The Shazam works the same! Its search engine crawls in the waveform and finds the signature to recognize the music/track name.

Mine show differently. One is RIFFX and the other JFIF.

I suspect Firefox might be interfering in the process too lol.

This thread is incredible, thanks to all creators for their hard work - y'all are talented af! Recently decided to give 11 a try and have really come to love the new UI and design, so much so that I've been inspired to start customizing my icons for the first time in my long Windows experience, so this thread is like hitting the jackpot.

I only have one request, if that's alright, and it's not for any icons that don't already exist. @Merlot1412 - you have some absolute bangers in some of your comments, and I'm assuming that the OneDrive links in those comments once served those icons up, but unfortunately they've expired, or the files were moved, or something. Is there any way that you could repost those icons for download? Or did anyone else on this thread manage to grab them who would be willing to post links? I don't have a specific icon or post number or anything (though the icon that first grabbed my attention was the Pirate Bay folder one 🤌), they were just all really great, so as many of Merlot1412's icons as y'all have would be very much appreciated (or if they were all compiled into one library then you'll win a prize 🙌).

Thanks for reading, and keep up the awesome work!

PS adding to my previous comment - I found the comment by @Merlot1412 that caught my eye, it was comment #800, I saw that icon for a "The Pirate Bay" folder and was immediately sold 😁 so if you or anyone could wouldn't mind posting the link for the "folders_colored.zip" collection that Merlot updated on the thread for a while there, it would be extremely appreciated!

PPS @EpicBWin11Fourm I love the the OceanGate Titan submersible controller icon, well done sir; however I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that the actual controller had these weird super duper extended joysticks attatched to/in place of the regular joysticks, like 4 inch nipples or something 😳 Now that is something that I'd love to see in icon form 😭

In 1935, "Republic Pictures" is established which then serves as a historic Minor Motion Picture Studio that produces western and romance movies. In 1996, Republic Pictures was shut down and ceased operations for none or unknown reasons, the whole library is sold to Paramount Pictures afterwards. After 27 years, Paramount Global Content Distribution revived Republic Pictures as an acquisition label which it kept some new movies distributed after its release on Paramount+ until they make their own movies in 2024 or so. The logo serves as a majestic Bald Eagle standing on top of a tall Paramount Mountain, now I turned it into a Fluent icon just to give tribute to the historic movie studio. It includes a Folder version and the original logo as well.

Hello, first of all I wanted to thank everyone for their magnificent work and dedication in making all of this icons over the past +2 years and checking through all 55 pages was pure pleasure, however... I noticed that many many posts, especially from user @Lucas North were for some reason removed or hidden, and also the previously often updated OneDrive link happens to be down also. I found the Folder 11 repository and one recent Mega link but after a quick look I have a feeling they don't have all of the content. Does anyone happen to have the original completed archive? I would be intererest in particular in the "folder_colored" directory and in these Icons, again, from Lucas.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe one of you guys could help me achieve my goal I am trying to make 3 folders icon, but it looks like crap I am not sure what I am doing wrong maybe I need to work with SVG file, because my icons do not look sharp enough.

I need a plain green and blue SVG folders icon like the download/pictures folders (without their icons of course).

I uploaded here my user icon I tried to make but unfortunately it is not looking sharp enough.
