Hi, I recently got a new laptop that come with 1 x 32gb stick of sk hynix ram, 5600 think it's cl42 which would run in single mode.

I was tiling of upgrading to 32gb of kingston impact ram but with 2 sticks 2 x 16gb It is 5600 ram but I read my laptop with so it down to 5200 in dial mode? Will that matter?

The specs for the kingston show as cl40. I wonder if I will see any difference at all by upgrading this to dual rank with a faster CL etc The kingston ram also has on die ecc.

Regards James

Check the system scanner to find out which RAM modules and speed you should purchase.

What's the laptop?

Your post seems to be inconsistent with the one in "My Computer".

The suggestion to use the Crucial scanner is good, but, if it was mine, I'd just use the model number to search for Crucial upgrades.

As it's a laptop, you may have limited options for setting RAM frequencies in the BIOS. (Or not.)

My thought on consumer computers: all the Notebooks I've worked on didn't/couldn't use ECC [Error Correcting] RAM modules. Haven't seen Desktops that use ECC either. There can be some performance improvement with Dual Channel modules [2 identical] but the benefit would depend upon what is being done such as Video editing, large spreadsheets, large databases, etc. If two other-wise identical modules are used but one is slower both will work at the slower speed, pretty much the way all things work in computing.

It's the Asus H7640 ProArt Studiobook 16
An Asus H7604 ProArt Studiobook 16, maybe? That's quite a powerful laptop.

The fastest officially supported RAM for its CPU is DDR5 5600. I don't know what frequency your laptop will run its RAM at. Or whether you can set that in the BIOS.

Crucial offers upgrades for it. They range from DDR5 4800 to DDR5 5600. I repeat that I don't know whether the laptop would run the RAM at 5600. You can test your current RAM frequency with the free CPU-Z. Don't be alarmed that it reports the RAM clock frequency: DDR (double data rate) effectively transfers data at twice that.

CPU-Z can also tell you the part number of the RAM that you have. If you could buy an exact match to it, 64GB dual channel would be cool.

One thing: CPU-Z may report a single DDR5 module as dual channel. DDR5 has two 32 bit wide memory paths. Older DDR, one 64 bit wide path.

Another thing: going to 2 DIMMs could increase your data transfer rate. But I can't predict whether you'd notice, outside of benchmarks. It would depend on what sort of software you use.
