Follow these steps to set VLC as default player to let VLC open for all media formats. Step 1: Open Windows 11 Settings by clicking the Windows icon and choosing Settings. Step 2: Under the App tab, click Default apps on the right side. Step 3: You can type Movies & TV to the box next to Set defaults for applications and press Enter.

Or
Alternatively, you can go to Default apps, scroll down to find VLC media player, and click this item. Then, change the default media player to VLC for all the file types.

In addition to default open a video with VLC by changing the default media setting, you can try another way to open your video with VLC. Right-click the target video and choose Open with. Then, select VLC media player and click OK. You can check the box of Always use this app to open xx files
Took a very quick search to find this.

Thanks, I was doing that. But isn't a way for VLC to play all audio, video files all formats vs using groove, movie player etc. in one go?

I think when I installed it first time round it gave me the option to select all the file types it was to default to. You can follow humbirds recommendations too and may also have the desired result :) either that or you can Try uninstall vlc and reinstall it again and see if it gives you the option to choose them again.

Does Windows 11 not allow you to set an app as the default player for everything without having to go to each and every file type one by one and setting it?

For example. Since Windows 11 22H2 Build 22621.1, Media Player has now replaced Films & TV as the default media player.
As far as I can see, if I want to set that back to Films & TV, I now have set every file type individually rather than simply set an app (Films & TV) as default for everything that it can play.

In Windows 10, it was called "Set Defaults by App"

No. The best way is as one suggestion by @humbird - Apps -default apps - expand VLC player and change the file types from Groove etc.

Are you effin kidding me?

I HAD that "by app" thing when I upgraded to windows 11.

Now I just checked and it's not there. I can't change multiple extentions at at once (by app) at all (!)

Microsoft just took away that capacity from Windows 11.

That's it — I am returning back to Windows 10 (it's the last confirmation I needed to know that Windows 11 is genuinely malevolent software: it is a blatant "capture" software to lock users in a Microsoft-software environment — basically a return to the 1990s style cowboy Microsoft era: to bully browbeat and force users into defaulting to Microsoft's apps by hook or by crook. Because after all there are some apps that have dozens and dozens of default extentions. Like media apps like VLC for example. It's just not feasible for anyone to manually tweak every single media extension one by one (in Windows Settings) to default to VLC or any other relevant application that handles lots and lots of extensions. Microsoft must not be allowed to both make it impossible to (at once) change where multiple extensions default in its own setting (i.e. per app) AND also take away the capacity of apps to change the extensions they handle to default to them from within their own settings. This was possible in Windows 10, all the way to 7 and Windows XP even.

And I'm in Europe so I'll also look into the legality of this (under EU rules). They were sued from doing this kind of thing in the 90s. Seems like they feel confident enough that everyone has forgotten their evil past and that they can do it all over again. That also explains the parallel development why Edge becoming increasingly not just a browser but all sort of vital windows component that will cause the entire operating system to malfunction if you uninstall it.
