I a problem with Windows 11 and I was wondering if anyone found a solution.

When I plug in a monitor to the PC, the sound defaults to that monitor.

I've repeatedly told Windows to disable sound to the monitor in question, but it keeps defaulting to it when it is re-connected to the PC.

Is there any way to get Windows to stick to the onboard sound instead of doing this?

This is not the same as selecting your default sound device. Go into Settings>System>Sound and select the device you want as default.

See photo. My monitor is the Benq device but sound goes to my USB connected speaker and stays that way.

But do you disconnect and re-connect the monitor. That's when the problem happens for me.

No, I don't. Clutching at straws here but have you tried turning AutoPlay off?

If you have the monitor connected and manually change the default output to speakers or whatever, next time it should play through the speakers regardless of the monitor being connected or not. That is until you connect the monitor and manually change it again to the monitor.

That's what I do, but it doesn't make any difference. I disable everything apart from the Speakers, but invariably when I unplug a monitor and plug it back it it defaults to that monitor.

Is there an audio setting in the monitor that you can adjust ? Just a thought. If it can't be done then an easy way to change output in windows is to select the right arrow in the sys tray speaker popup,

Disabling a speaker doesn't work as they are enabled when reconnected. You have to manually change the default output to speakers instead of the monitor.

This thread is a bit old, but I thought I would come back to it, since I am still having the problem.
It seems that Win11 sometimes adds the monitor as a new monitor and that's causing the issue.

There are more entries than that. There are actually EIGHT entries for the same monitor.

Excellent. I have done that. It works just fine. Thank you.

An interesting point, the application only sees one monitor audio output, whereas Windows sees eight.

In Device Manager, choose View ➜ tick the option: Show hidden devices. Next, expand the Audio inputs and outputs category. For each playback device that appears in there with a greyed out icon, you can right-click on the device ➜ choose Delete device.
