I did the F12 hardware test and everything passed without issue.

Have you tried a BIOS reset? Before that though, make sure you have either decrypted your drives or have the Bitlocker keys available to unlock the Bitlocked drives.

I have not done a bios reset yet. Maybe my next option. I have the bitlocker key saved. I have used it a few times already. I will look into that as well.

You mentioned that you install the latest drivers from Intel. Since this is happening on all your Dell laptops, my guess is that the latest Intel driver is the problem. I would run Dell SupportAssist and see if it loads drivers designed for your laptops and that will work.

I've had several Dell XPS laptops over the years, and my current computer is a Dell XPS just over a year old. I use only Dell SupportAssist and Dell Command | Update to install drivers that are actually designed to work with my Dell laptops.

This was happening before I started using the intel drivers. The issue was one of the reasons I started using the intel software. Come to find out my system was faster using them vs. the support assist versions. It's also a well known fact that support assist is not a very good piece of software as it's constantly scanning your computer even when "turned off".

If you don't believe in using Dell support software, have you tried going to support on the Dell website? Dell support will identify your computer and offer the proper drivers.

No they are different drivers. But as I mentioned, this was happening before I started using the intel drivers and my pc is faster on the intel based drivers....go figure.

Knock on wood, since doing the couple of things mentioned above with the graphics controller reset, and the hardware test, it's working as normal. That's great I hope it keeps working so I can get the egpu instead of buying a new full system.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like Windows is doing something with powerstates. Just out of curiosity, do you have FastStartup enabled in Windows? I've had a lot of issues with that when enough time has passed.

Are you aware that holding down the Shift key while clicking Shut Down in Windows bypasses Fast Startup and performs a full shutdown of the system.

Why this matters:
  • Fast Startup (also known as hybrid shutdown) saves the system kernel and drivers to a hibernation file when you shut down, allowing for faster boot times.
  • However, this can cause lingering issues like network glitches, driver problems, or system instability.
  • A Shift+Shutdown forces Windows to skip Fast Startup and fully power off, similar to a restart, which clears out those cached states.
This trick is especially handy for troubleshooting odd behavior or ensuring a clean system state.

I am, but a system with an SSD does not need fast startup. It is more trouble than it is worth. It is also impossible to do a clean shutdown when you already have a black screen.

Agree! I turn Fast Startup OFF on all my computers. With today's hardware Microsoft needs to make the default be OFF!

The first thing I would try when it goes to a black screen is to try refreshing your display adapter using the following keyboard shortcut.
↓
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B

If that works, then we can progress to the next step.

I assume they have it mainly enabled because it uses same file for storage as Hibernation, which is an important function for laptops and power saving.
