Desktop Control Panel Icon Wont Use Specific Icon

im trying to get the control panel desktop icon to be a specific icon. im able to change it to other icons except this specific one.


i can change it to a similarly alternate looking one using "shell32.dll,90"

when using "shell32.dll,35", the icon will choose the new Windows 11 control panel icon. does anyone know why? is there anyone else who has this same behavior?

Not sure what you're trying to do but I have a control panel shortcut with target of C:\Windows\System32\control.exe
I can assign it any shell or custom icon I choose.

Just a comment, I have done as @glasskuter suggests, works fine. For things like getting the WIndows Version/Build I create a shortcut to winver.exe and use the blue ball with i in it for information.

The keys for that Icon are owned by trusted installer.

shell32.dll,35 is the old windows 95 control panel icon. for whatever reason, when selecting it for the desktop control panel icon, it reverts back to the new control panel icon.

the old windows 95 control panel icon is located in shell32.dll and its ID is 35, hence me setting the registry key value to "shell32.dll,35".

i even tried setting the recycling bin to the windows 95 control panel icon manually by going to Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings > Change Icon and it still didnt work. it reverts to the new control panel icon

I created a new folder on desktop then right click->Property->Customize and try to change Icon to icon#35 of shell32.dll according to IconExplorer4.2 which is a folder with a tool picture on it.

Install iconviewer > go to DLL > right click > properties > Icons tab > find icon in array > extract/save it. Then assign the extracted as your icon and it should take.

I'm not sure, but it seems like you need to specify /t REG_EXPAND_SZ
