Hi, could really use your knowledge. I am using an AI photo editing software and it’s obviously very intense on the processor. I can’t afford to upgrade. I have two. One is 8th generation Intel Core i3-8350 @ 4.0 Ghz And the other is 6th generation Intel Core i5-6500 @ 3.20GHz. I would be using the i3 one on the installed system and don’t want to do the job to swap but I assume that this i3 is better than that i5, or it’s equal. Am I right?

I think you mean i3-8350K, right? I can't find any non K variant.
Anyway, you would be right in saying that the i3-8350K is better than the i5-6500.
Just a simple web search in benchmarks will show you that i3-8350K has a better score.

The presumption I make is the higher the Core number the better the processing, e.g. i5 is better than i3, i7 is better than i5, etc. But it really comes down to what the motherboard supports. The lowest iteration of Intel CPUs that meet Win11 requirements are Generation 8. The Celeron CPU is supposedly at the bottom but the one I have running Win11 is working fine but I'm not using it for video editing or large files like spreadsheets.

Generally it is safe to assume that a newer generation is faster than an older one, but other factors such as i3 vs i5 have a bearing. Fortunately you can look up benchmark tests for CPUs, and in this case your 8th gen i3 is faster than your 6th gen i5 by some 18%.


It also has the advantage that an i3-8350K is a supported processor for Windows 11, while 7th gen or older are not.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
The Intel Core i3-8350K is the better CPU.

The I5-6500 and the I3-8350K are both 4 core/4 Thread CPUs. The I3-8350K has an advantage of being supported under Windows 11. The I5-6500 is not. I'm not sure if they could be swapped. Socket 1151 was used for a long time, and I'm not sure that all chipsets with it could support all CPUs of that socket type.

Some AI photo software (Topaz AI, DXO Photolab) benefits from a good GPU (graphics card), preferably an nVidia RTX type. Most of those would be a rather expensive update for an old system. (The I3-8350K was discontinued almost 7 years ago.)

Does the AI software use GPGPU for processing? There are plenty of used Nvidia Tesla/Pascal cards on eBay for £100. Might offer a boost for little money.

I am a user, heavily running graphics on Windows. And I did upgrade my PC several times.

Here is my experience, FYI.

When upgrading from i5-4590 to i5-6500, the performance improvement looked significant (my measurement was test time). I was happy awhile.

Well, when upgrading from i5-6500 to i5-8600 (this CPU looks better than i3-8350), the performance improvement looked so-so, if NOT worse on my graphics running. My measurement test time was sometimes faster a little bit. sometimes slower. Hence my conclusion they are similar. (not worth the money to upgrade)

My next possible upgrade will be to i5-9600.
