I just got Directory Opus, and am trying to figure out the tabs. I got one tab going, but if I put in another, the first one disappears. The tab bar can show all, but the first one never came back. The manual doesn't address getting started with tabs very well. Any tips?
Thanks,
Kim
Have a look at the screenshot below. You can double click anywhere on the empty space indicated by the double headed arrow, or you can click on the + button indicated by the single headed arrow.

Notice that there are three tabs open at D:\Temp.

Unless I am doing this wrong, it seems that everytime I click on a folder (but not click on the tabs), the click makes a tab. Which I don't want. Sorry to be such a dimmy, but do I click on the plus sign first, then click on a folder? Or vica versa. Or am I totally lost.

I think I got it. First I click the plus sign then I click on a folder I want to make into a tab.
If I don't click on the plus sign first, and just click on folders, they will go to the tab bar, but won't be a tab. There is only one "tab" that shows what I clicked on, and each folder click will show on that "tab" only. And of course any previous folders will disappear as they all show in that one tab.

I'm not sure of your problem. But something that is worth noting is that it's a good idea to set a default Lister.

In Directory Opus, a Lister is the main window that displays files and folders. So, what you see when you open Directory Opus is a Lister. It's basically the same as File Explorer, but with enhanced functionality. Each new tab is also considered a Lister. It's just the terminology that Directory Opus uses.

Now, back to setting a default Lister. My computers all have more than one internal drive as I like to work on secondary drives rather than work on the primary operating system drive, so I set my default Lister to D:\ drive. So when I open up Directory Opus or open a new tab, it opens at D:\ drive.

You can set the default Lister to any drive or folder path you want. You may prefer the Documents folder if you only have one internal drive. I can't remember what the out of the box default Lister is set to. What folder do you see when you open Directory Opus or open a new tab?

If you want to change it, you browse to the drive or folder you wish to set as the default Lister, then go to Settings -> Set As Default Lister.
If you have multiple tabs open when you do that, all those tabs will open at their respective paths when you open Directory Opus. It's best to just have the one tab open when you set the default Lister.

When I open D Opus it shows Home, favorites, desktop, this PC.

I notice that a tab retained from the previous session is highlighted. And the folder of the tab appears under Desktop (on the left).

Clicked to highlight another tab, and closed D Opus. Opened again and the same highlighted tab was highlighted on reopen and the left folders showed the folder the highlighted tab was in.

Tried to do as you said, and set my C:\ drive as default lister. But the highlighted tab still takes over, and D Opus opens to whatever tab is highlighted.
This is not a terrible issue to have, as I can just make a tab of what I want Lister to open to when I start it again.

I think I really did get it this time. I didn't know about locking tabs, so tried that, and now they don't change to folders I just clicked on. Very nice.

There is also some good information on youtube re Directory Opus.
The amount of tweaking you can do with it is mind boggling. I have been using it for many years and am still finding new things.
I've posted in the forum at the resource centre a few times and always got quick responses.

A beta version released 2 days ago caused a minor bug. I posted on their support site at 9AM today and by 11AM the developer responded saying the new beta has been released and fixes the bug. Just fyi, they are in Australia.

allan,
That seems typical for their support, always quick to sort problems.
Version 13 is now at 13.16.9 so quite a few updates. They are on the ball.

I had DOpus back in my Amiga days, and it was heaven-sent (especially for archiving and unarchiving directories). But I've never had a need for it on Windows. So what's a good case-use for it these days that would make me want it again? I'm wondering if I'm doing something the hard way that DOpus could make more convenient.
