Solved Disable drop shadows problem

I have a program that, every time it starts, I have to click a button to disable drop shadows. I am trying to find a way of PERMANENTLY disabling DS and I have tried all the suggested fixtures such as unchecking boxes in sys.cpl\advanced\view etc and unchecked all relevant boxes but this seems to be just a temporary measure as, next time I go into my program I have to manually disable drop shadows again from there.

So, is there any way to permanently disable DS ???

  • Do you mean sysdm.cpl>advanced>performance>visual effects?
  • What version of Windows is build 9200?

Hi.
What you uncheck in Sysdm.cpl\Advanced\View section may not control drop shadows in your program. The ones you uncheck are 1) Show shadows under mouse pointer / cursor. 2) Use Drop Shadows on desktop icon labels. (Please note my item translations may not be what you see on your Windows. Sorry for that.) Therefore you may have to look elsewhere, maybe in your program's settings or options, if your program has one.

The program I am referring to is called Iconoid and it is for desktop icons. What I like about this desktop organiser is that if you disable the drop shadows it puts a background colour behind the icon name, making it much easier to read on the desktop. And it also locks all the icons in the same place.

My Windows version is Home Premium x64

And yes, I used sysdm.cpl to get me to the view\visual effects section

When you went to Advanced>Performance "Settings”

Did you also disable smooth edges of screen fonts?

It should work via that setting for shadows on desktop labels.
However, it may be worth looking at this registry option. If it’s there, make sure the value is “0”. If it isn’t, create the DWORD and see if it helps.

  1. Open the Registry Editor app.
  2. Go to the following Registry key. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  3. On the right, modify or create a new 32-Bit DWORD value and name it “ListviewShadow”.
    Note: Even if you are running 64-bit Windows you must still create a 32-bit DWORD value.
    Set its value to 1 to enable drop shadows for Desktop icon labels. A value data of 0 will disable them.
  4. To make the changes done by the Registry tweak take effect, you need to sign out and sign in to your user account. Alternatively, you can restart the Explorer shell.

There is a possibility that the program needs to be run elevated (As admin) for the settings to stay permanent?

Close iconoid from the system tray or wherever it resides.
Find the icon for iconoid, right click on it and “Run As Admin”
Change the drop shadow setting
Close iconoid
Restart the computer and check to see if it sticks.

Or there also maybe a chance that iconoid always needs to be run elevated. I don’t know. Cross that bridge later.

Sorry about all the posts, Barry but I don't want you to miss an edit.

I downloaded the 64bit version. I don't believe this is supported anymore and if it is it hasn't been updated to match the latest Windows versions. However I don't know what version of Windows you're running. Perhaps it just hates Windows 11 or the other way around.
But simply, I believe this is as buggy as software can get.

Running iconoid as admin made no difference to it remembering settings after reboot.
I couldn't get it off my PC fast enough. If I am feeling game, I'll run it again tomorrow and try investigate it.

- Stopped being updated in 2008.
- Used antiquated dll code and architecture.
- Might work in compatibility mode. (I doubt it)
- Will be useless once 24H2 is released because of UWP.

Well everyone, I have now tried every suggestion, including the registry change, and nothing worked. I guess I'll have to just accept that this program doesn't like Windows 11 (who does ??) so each time I boot up I will just have to manually disable the drop shadows from within the program itself.

Unfortunately sillysot.com is no more, so it isn’t being updated and wont be unless they come back or someone takes up where they left off.

When I have time, I will investigate further. There would have to be a registry entry (I assume) for iconoid where as the remove shadows is set to “1”, if it can be changed to “0” there is a chance it will stick. I have things to do but will check on this at a later date.
