Windows 11 Pro - version 24H2
Whenever I run Disk Clean-Up and have it scan the System Files, Disk Clean-up never seems to erase the Windows Update Cleanup files, which comes to 380 Mb. That size seems to remain relatively constant. Given the size of most files nowadays, that's a very small amount, so I'm not worried about it. Just more curious than anything. Any thoughts?

It happens if you "reclaim" ALL the packages in the Component Store.

Open Terminal (Admin) and run this command... Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
...and tell me what it says for... "Number of Reclaimable Packages"


If it shows TWO or more than two Reclaimable Packages, then open a Terminal (Admin), and run the following command...
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

For example, here's my Analyze...

If yours looks like this, then just run Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase ...and that should fix Disk Cleanup.


If you're still on 24H2, you may not be able to fix Disk Cleanup.
But it's not a major problem.
Disk Cleanup should get you down to approx. 194MB even when not fixed.

I get "Number of Reclaimable Packages : 2" as well.

I have Windows version 25H2.

Using Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase brought the total down to 19.6 mb. I ran Cleanup Disk a few times and the number has stayed down that low.

The screenshot below is before I ran the ResetBase command.

Let it persist or you may have a problem to install further updates.

There may be some things that need attended to. You should be able to get it down to 2-3MB.
Make sure ALL the boxes in Disk Cleanup are checked.

New info...

I just ran Disk Cleanup and noticed the same 194MB leftover.
So I ran Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase again and now it's back down to 2+MB

So... I'm gonna assume that I need to run the ResetBase command every time, before I run Disk Cleanup. :/

Such problems began to occur after Microsoft introduced a new method of Windows update to reduce download size.

I don't believe Disk Cleanup is actually broken.
I think it's more of a "reporting" error, but I don't "know" that for a fact.

Like... it actually does the cleaning, but doesn't report that it has.


The Disk Cleanup bug started at the beginning of 24H2.
I do know, that with the bug in effect, it consistently reported approx. 194MB of leftover stuff, after cleaning.
I also know that currently, running: Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase ...will fix Disk Cleanup, at least until the next update. Then you'll need to run the ResetBase command again.

Now Disk Cleaner is reading only 30.5 mb of system files after using Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase. That's a lot better than it has been.

We see a lot of posts about unreclaimable package space but we need to get things in perspective.

If we did not have a dism tool to identify the above, we would probably NEVER worry about it as the space being considered is less than 0.1% of a typical 1TB drive.

Ok on some very old drive, or emmc drive pcs with only 32GB drives, the above space could be a significant portion.

However, on most drives, the amount of unreclaimable space is noise, with the daily fluctuation due to temporary files being an order of magnitude higher at least.

If one ever gets to the point that reclaiming the package space is remotely important, then it is time to purge the drives of clutter or get larger ones anyway.
