For some reason, cleaning the disk through Windows settings doesn't delete the checked "Temporary files" (770mb) nor Windows Defender files. All the other checked files do get cleaned up normally. It completes as if it successfully deleted everything but it doesn't seem like it when I click Refresh.

Trying to delete these files via the Disk Cleanup tool (cleanmgr.exe) as Administrator or in Safe mode also doesn't work. I am the only user and Administrator on the PC.

I am aware I could try to go to the temp folder and delete the files manually, but why doesn't it work this way? Is this reproducible at anyone's end?

Failing to clean 'temporary internet files' has been a long standing bug in Windows 10 for more years than I can remember. Basically, there are no files to clean up, Disk clean up is in error reporting that there are any. There is a workaround that can reset the apparent 'phantom files' to zero, but they start to come back after a while.

I can't say I've seen this bug in Windows 11 (yet) but the same workaround should fix it - or you could just ignore it, knowing that there's nothing really there.

For more, see this thread from post #8 on....

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. Thanks for the info. Mind you, in my case it's about Temporary files and Windows Defender, not Temporary Internet FIles (since the fix in the thread you linked is about moving IE's cache location.

As for them being phantom files, I checked the size of the Temp folder in Appdata-> Local and it shows 649mb hence me doubting this is merely a wrong calculation.

I found another thread in which you're stating that Disk Cleanup (or the clean up via Settings) can not delete files that are less than 7 days old. Is this still true for Windows 11?

You need to be aware that for 'Temporary Files' Windows will only clean up files older than 7 days. There is a registry fix that can change that. This article explains that with screenshots from Windows 7, but exactly the same registry settings exists in Windows 11.

So I've waited all this time, thinking it would delete after 7 days but the issue is still here. There's someone else describing the same issue here.
The issue is only present with the tickable Temporary Files option within Disk Cleanup

What is the cause here? Is no one else having this issue with "Temporary Files" specifically in the Disk Cleanup?

Hey Brink!

So is it actually normal that Disk Cleanup shows files that are less than 7 days old?

If you clean "Temporary files" (not Temporary Internet files), is there still a substantial amount of it after refreshing Disk Cleanup?

It still shows in both Settings and Disk Cleanup. Temporary Files does not get completely cleaned when ticking its checkbox.

I am talking about this specific category

When cleaning that one, does it completely get deleted?

Thanks for your reply. I'm very curious now which program is causing this. Is it anything game related?

It will when deleted from Settings.

I'm curious what the cause then is because that's not happening in my case.

I think BrianEngland has provided the clue. Temporary Files will only be delete when they are no longer in use. If some program is running that has temporary files open that could explain why they are not being deleted.
I had that problem but it's gone now, it seemed to fix after I uninstalled a program, can't remember which one it was. My 305MB temp files got deleted.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Not sure but it seems to be back now! I've really not installed anything new since my clean install last week. My Temp folders are on a different partition so I've no idea! I've now got 284MB Temp files that won't delete.

Very weird. In my case it always leaves at least 392mb taken by Temp files. Space added on top of that 392mb does get cleaned.

Question:
If you go to your temp folder (Start Menu -> Run -> type in "%temp%" without quotation marks and hit Enter) do you see several folders with numbers and letters separated by - ? Kind of like these?

Schermafbeelding 2022-07-10 170915.png

If yes, does each of those folders contain a file named DismHost.exe?

I have similar folders but they're all empty. My %temp% folder is not on the C: drive where the 284MB of files are

Paul Black is a good Batch Scripts writer on Windows 10 forums and he wrote this script that may be of interest. Disk Cleanup - ALL Modes In the downloads list scroll down to the seventh listing and you'll find it there. It may be an option for you and worth looking into.

Thank you for that but I'm curious why it's simply not working within Windows itself.

I noticed I have many temp folders containing dismhost.exe and googling that shows that many ppl have the same issue dating back in 2015 all up until 2022.

Dism Host Servicing Process (DismHost.exe), a Malware?
Don't discount this quickly. It is an option for you that is not presented in this thread. It's just a theory. But it may be real. Look into it.
