Disk Optimization Best Practice in Windows 11 Pro

Hello All

Is it best to keep it as scheduled disk optimization with a NvMe Boot Drive & Sata Game SSD

or should i turn off the schedule and manually remember to do it when needed?

Storage Drive 4TB WD black

Previously had it set for Default Weekly, seen on a Youtube video that Optimization Defrag of Hard drive isn't needed weekly or monthly to be done as it adds extra wear and tear to the hard drive

Any other advice Welcome

Set it for monthly... that's plenty fast enough.
I do mine manually, but I don't have a life and have lots of time on my hands. :-)

Ok Will schedule for Monthly in that case, should be perfectly fine then, as the files storage on the 4TB hard drive don't change that much lately typically lol

Do make sure i backup the storage drive though along with rest of the drives when i do my Weekly/Monthly backups

I've been letting Windows do its thing with the optimizing. Back in the days of slower drives defragging was important to lessen the time the read/write heads had in searching for parts of a file. I've managed to get my Desktop HDDs updated to 7200RPM, much better than the 5400RPM models.

I just leave mine alone and let Windows manage it. Have done this for years. No problems with any of my SSD's and NVMe's.

Yes, you always have a backup of your storage drive. It is up to you to decide how often you need to back it up depending on how often the files change and what you actually have on the drive. As an example, the data on my storage drive does not change all that much and though I wouldn't like to ever lose that data, there's nothing there I could not do without or replace. I back it up about every 2 months. In between backups if I create an irreplaceable file, I'll throw a copy of the file into Onedrive until I make my next backup.

We all utilize our computers differently so we each have to make our own choices of what is right for us. No one size fits all.

This is interesting. I just got Win 11 yesterday, with the OS in an M.2 and an external HDD attached, and when I ran defrag, noticed that the scheduled optimization was not turned on. Is that normal?

A thorough defrag done too often must actually increase wear on a HDD.

Just leave it at MS W11 defaults.

Those Youtube videos are by techie wannabes who never present any information to support their bs.

I can assure you - trimming weekly will have absolutely negligible impact on the drive life.

Worrying about it will have a higher impact on your life LOL.

Yeah after my latest Windows 11 Pro Clean install to fix another issue--have left Windows Settings as Default settings this time around, as realize nowadays better to leave at Default than listen to Youtube Tech videos "for optimization settings" as who knows those may have messed up my install in the past

Tweaking settings might be good for some things, but for Windows Settings these days rather just have everything working stable, and hopefully everything stays nice and smooth and backups done regularly, and all is well lol

Which reminds me gotta finish backup of 3rd Household PC shortly here
