The only HDDs I still use are external ones used for nothing but storing old ISOs and old apps going waaay back. Since I rarely connect them I do not defrag them.
All of my system drives and storage drives are nvme. The system automatically trims the ones connected all the time. The others I do run trim manually if I connect them..

I still have two internal mechanical storage drives on my main computer for data and backups etc. My operating system drive is an SSD.

But even my internal WD storage drives always display 0% fragmented when I check them in Windows Defragmenter and Optimize Drives.

Windows seems to handle things pretty well these days.

Even though they "say" OK...you can still defragment them with the Windows Defragment and Optimize drives tool.
The tool defragments and then consolidates the partition.

I'm using M.2 SSD drives, so there's no need to defrag.

Yes I do defragment my external drives, which are HDDs. They contain tens of millions of files that change quite often so the drive would be awfully slow if I didn't do this.

I have upgraded almost all of my laptops to SSDs now, but I still have two that have HDDs. One because it just sits on the network 24/7 and acts as a file server (speed isn't important) and the other because, at 15 years old and nearly 4 years of 'powered on' use I'm intrigued to find out just how much longer it can last :D

Both of those I manually defrag using Windows own 'Defragment and Optimise Drives'. I defrag once a month, after the Patch Tuesday update and before making their Macrium image.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package. In-place upgrade to 24H2 using hybrid 23H2/24H2 install media. Upgraded to 25H2 by Enablement Package. Also running Insider Dev, and Canary builds and Windows 10 as native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Wonder if my backups ( Macrium, AoMEI ,etc) on my external HDDs , will keep safe , after defragmenting............ :wink:

I have a 500Gig HDD in each of my PCs for storage, I put my Macrium backups on them for instance. I manually defrag with Auslogics Disk Defrag Portable

I do.

my NAS runs mix of SSDs and HDDs. often big size files move (images added/removed). at that time, manually defragment is my best choice.

my main computers have SSD only. every time after restoring image, I do manually trimming as I see "Never , , ," when image done.

The fastest and the most effective way is to boot recovery and defragment from there. Note: drive letters change!

Both of my machines run SSDs, which can't be defragmented. My file server runs fedora, so the HDDs never need to be defragmented. That's strictly a windows thing.

Not quite a Windows thing only but a file system thing. NTFS, FAT32 (which most dont use anyways because of size limitations), EXT2/EXT3 and for instance ZFS or EXT4 work very differently.

Although EXT4 has built in mechanisms to counter fragmentation, it is still not completely immune. So yes, under Linux you also require to defrag the FS from time to time to keep the performance up on HDDs.

Linux isn't magic, nor is Windows the dying martyr here.
