I don't build my computers, I buy them. Nonetheless, I like to know what's inside. I tend to buy devices, if I also like their (detailed) documentation.

How about you?

Same. Nothing beats good documentation.
It seems to be getting worse as time goes by. :(

I have been buying all of my computers from Micro Center for a long time now. I go by the specs for the computers that are in my price range. Out of the selection I try to choose the one that I feel is the best to fit my needs. Then I'll order it online and pick it up in the store.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I suggest that all aspects of your requirements should be considered - performance requirements, support requirements, timescale requirements [including effective lifespan requirements], financial requirements/constraints.

Each of these needs its own thorough consideration.
- Support [for example] includes documentation, provision of Bios & driver updates for given periods, direct technical support, provision of spare parts, ...
- Dell [again, just for example] is good at some of these support issues but not others, in my experience.

Getting the information to assess whether or not your requirements are met can be difficult in itself.
- I would never again want to be saddled with an S0 Modern standby computer because of its severe performance limitations so I'd want to see the results of the PowerCfg -a command before choosing a laptop.
- I'd hazard the guess that I'm only going to get that information from other users of the brand-model and that would be a job & a half.

All the best,
Denis

I remember a time when a lot of the documentation was provided with the computer you bought. Anymore, you must hunt it down online. I have to agree that Dell provides some of the most complete documentation and knowledge base online than any other manufacturer. They are the best at matching specific drivers for your specific system too.

Personally, Will never buy a branded pc, Will ALWAYS custom build moving forward. That said, I LOVE having all the boxes etc for my components with everything for each one inside(Other than the component ofc :D) I know what i buy and build due to doing the relevant research first.

Have always built my desktop PCs, even my first was custom built. The only "store bought" I buy are laptops.

That said, by building my own I know exactly what's in it and each component has its own documentation.

That said one of the things that I love about Gigabyte motherboards vs say Asus boards is the extensive documentation that comes with Gigabyte boards. I've done a lot of hardware troubleshooting and have found on a consistent basis Asus board manuals lacking compared to Gigabyte.

And NO, I'm not dissing Asus, or saying their board are less than Gigabyte, I'm strictly speaking owner's manuals.

    This is my backup system.
A few years ago, you used to get documentation that was written by non-native English speakers, sometimes with comical results. I think that the system/parts manufacturers have realized this and are now upping their game regarding documentation. I have an old ASUS motherboard manual that I was looking at the other day, trying to hook up the mobo for an experiment, and the documentation had numerous syntax and grammatical errors. Compare that to my new board, which has nearly flawless documentation. It still isn't as comprehensive as I would like it to be, but it is very easy to read.

Electronic component datasheets are the same. I deal with them for work all of the time, and I have noticed a distinct improvement in language/syntax over the past few years. I think that electronics and computer manufacturers have realized that the North American market is a large segment of their business, and are taking more care to make sure that English manuals and datasheets are more grammatically correct and easy to read.

I build my machines from scratch, no ready made sheet for me. I want to be in control. I also built, fixed or upgraded many many PCs for others. Already in planing stages, I download and read instructions/manuals for every part, that gives me much more detailed data about parts and their compatibility with other parts.
