Does anyone know, why MS decided to rewrite the taskbar in Win11?

They did it to annoy people like you and I, just like other annoying retrograde things in Windows 11.

I don't think it's whatever they want. It looks more like a trial and error situation. Most people who use PCs are just along for the ride.
They do not and don't want to understand any of the rational behind this. All they want is to push the start button and surf or work or
play. OTH, members and helpers are here to yes, help but also wanting to understand or trying to (my case) understand how it all works and how changes would or will affect the running of the OS and / or the hardware. My point is, MS is "maybe" trying to make it so everyone can have a good experience.

I think from reading this thread, the general conception is that it’s anyones guess.

I still disagree "it's because they can" if you own something you don't need any permission !

This is not a personal item. This is a business and as such, you have to, to a certain point, acquiesces to your patron's
needs but, not necessarily all their wants.

I think I recall that in the TOS or conditions of use it says we don’t own Windows. It’s on lease with conditions that they can change whatever they like without notice. I believe the license is a right of passage, not ownership. Or do you mean “they” own it?

I do think that is what they want to do. IMHO, they need to spend more effort on fixing known problems and less effort or releasing new features. Helping MS to get the bugs worked out of any changes in the OS before releasing it to the public is one of the reasons I decided to join the Insider Ring. With buggy updates being released to the public I'm not sure why they still have the Insider Ring.

We only have the rights to use the software as long as we abide by the TOS.

I may go on one of my rants about something MS changes, and the folks here are my sounding board, but in the end I always adapt. MS is gonna do what MS is gonna do. I learned a long time ago my blood pressure benefits from rolling with the flow of whatever MS throws at me. In the grand scheme of things, a change in the taskbar is the least of my worries.

At the very least you could have written your own program to show how easy it is.

Just FYI, but you CAN drag and drop to the taskbar as I show here...

It's been that way for a while now. Over a year (maybe two, don't remember, but it's been a while).

If I open the Start Menu, I cannot drag an icon from there to the taskbar. However, if I click on All Apps, I can drag and drop anything (other than folders) in the list onto the taskbar. If I try to drag and drop anything in the Start Menu onto the desktop, no can do, but if I click on the All Apps menu, I can drag and drop anything (other than folders) I want onto the desktop. Finally, once I put an icon onto the desktop from the All Apps list, I can drag it onto the taskbar.

I cannot drag and drop anything from the taskbar though. :scream:

Actually, I just did it... but you have to do it from "All apps"

And BTW, you CAN also pin any icon in the Start Menu to the taskbar by right clicking it, clicking "More" and clicking "Pin to taskbar". Been doing that for a while as well.
