Does SATA III to USB 3.0 cable slow down a SSD significantly?

also enable write caching on the Silicon Power to enable the use of the SSD's onboard RAM.

Other than that maybe try the StarTech $12 cable or buy a proper external USB 3.0 enclosure for the SSD that supports UASP.

Is the enclosure a better option than the cable?

When would anyone prefer a cable over the enclosure?

I bought this internal one to make use of the cable.

I might as well return the SSD and get a proper external one. I don't see the point of spending on an enclosure again since the original idea was to buy within a budget.

An external one is just an enclosure + SSD + cable and you don;t get to choose the SSD they put inside.

An enclosure doesn't cost much.

The reason I would choose an enclosure over a cable is that the electronics are protected inside the enclosure.

Up to you.

A good enclosure with UASP and latest tech would cost about half the price of this 256 GB Silicon Power. I think I should just spend a little more and get another T5 with 500 GB. It's just too good.

Sure. I don't see any benefit for the cable over the enclosure. I bought it because at that time I had a very limited use. The enclosure would always be the better choice.

Well not really.

If you want to get full performance from a drive over USB, you need a USB chipset on the USB-3 enclosure (or whatever) that supports UASP (USB Attached SCSI). SCSI is a transfer protocol for disks. With UASP support the device will be treated as a disk, and you will get SATA transfer rates. It improves performance by a significant amount for USB attached disks. These cable converters do not usually support UASP (but I have a StarTech one that does). Neither do most USB jump drives. Most newer external hard drive enclosures have USB chipsets that support UASP. UASP support was introduced in Windows with Windows 10. TRIM is also supported.

So now there are jump drives that support UASP. When plugged in they look like a SCSI disk device. Here is the one I have., a 512 GB Patriot. It performs at SATA SSD rates and it do4esn't even have a SRAM buffer!

Here is what I get with the StarTech USB-SATA converter cable (that supports UASP) attached to a 128GB Samsung 840 Pro :

I always look for UASP.

Used to use enclosures with the old spinners but just use cable on SSDs. Easily swappable although modern enclosures are tool less. Just being lazy I suppose.

The only real disadvantage with cables as opposed to cases, (assuming same build quality:wink: ), is the physical connection to the drive is more likely to become damaged or just contaminated with detritus, otherwise there is no difference, There is a possibility that all other things being equal, the caseless option will be better ventilated, remain cooler, and run more efficiently

To the contrary, a good enclosure has a thermal pad and an aluminum body that acts as a heatsink so it offers better cooling in a fanless (passive cooling) type scenario. You can get separate heatsinks to help mitigate the problem to some degree, but not all heatsinks are created equal, so if the thermal glue starts to break down gradually over time you run the added risk of causing permanent damage to the SSD when you attempt to remove the heatsink to be able to replace the glue. Or if you use normal TIM as opposed to the glue, hardening of the TIM can still cause it to 'death grip' on you anyway after all, and then I haven't even mentioned the fact that some heatsinks come with a bracket suspension mechanism that leaves a lot to be desired. Finally, if your SSD is relatively slow and it doesn't generate too much heat during those prolonged, sustained data transfer sessions, then it should still also be noted that the USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5GBps) counterpart of the enclosure that I mentioned in my previous post can already be had for less than 15 bucks on amazon:

P.S., here's another link to an M.2 NVMe enclosure that can support USB 3.2 Gen 2.

I agree with all you say, but was stating that an external cable connection could be as good or better than a case, all other things being equal .

I personally only use pro grade NVMe drives in SSK alloy cases, the cooling is passive but within specs for the drives

The alloy cases I use are a little more expensive but more flexible for my use with 3.2 Gen2 although not toolless they can swap out the drive quickly enough

@hdmi

I just noticed that the SSK is only $16.99 if you live in the U.S. so yeah, at these prices I don't think it's even worth considering to buy a cable instead.

We get used to paying the UK tax - though a lot of the cost to us is the exchange rate IT companies seem to default to just swapping the £ for the original $ even when the exchange rate was nearer to 2 to 1

Just checked and I paid the same price as current for the last one I bought back in may, - the low price shown must have been a special offer of some kind

Though if they're raising prices now it's more likely to be ready for the Black Friday Sale reductions

It's not just that. I mean, I just found an M.2 NVMe SSD that's 2TB and that costs only €158 over here, namely the Kingston NV1 SNVS/2000G, but it can do 2200 MB/s sustained read in CrystalDiskMark according to what I have seen, so with USB 3.0 Gen 2 at 10Gbps, I would still only be getting 1000MB/s, and that is also in addition to having to pay the hefty price difference between the U.S. and Europe. Unless of course I decide to use it to replace my 512GB M.2 SATA SSD that I have inside my laptop right now. If only they'd make a reasonably priced 4TB SSD that's capable of only 1000MB/s, that's when I might consider taking the plunge. So this is why I still haven't. At least for me and how I like to use my data, it's just not worth the cost right now.

I still have quite a few 8GB USB pen drives kicking about, I also have a 128MB one somewhere and also a 256GB the price of storage devices do fall over time but it's not a quick transition

I would not be surprised if I paid the same or similar price for the two smaller unit sizes though the current 256GB one was a little more

That 256GB flash drive that I previously posted a benchmark of is what I bought some time during the summer of 2017 so it's already quite old. I own two of 'em (they are indentical twins, lol...), and, two of these combined still takes up noticeably less laptop bag space than even the most compact SSD enclosure that I have seen, they have been serving me really well I must add, and they don't run too hot, unlike the fastest of SanDisk 256GB flash drives at least according to what I have read, as those like to overheat and then they suddenly just die.
