This tutorial will show you how to downgrade from Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise to Windows 11 Home without losing anything.

You may find yourself needing or wanting to downgrade from the Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise edition to the Windows 11 Home edition.

A direct downgrade from Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise to Windows 11 Home is not supported, and would normally require a clean install of Windows 11 Home resulting in the loss of all your data.

Using a workaround in this tutorial, you can downgrade your device from Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Education, or Windows 11 Enterprise to the Windows 11 Home edition without data loss.

You must be signed in as an administrator to downgrade to the Windows 11 Home edition.

Downgrading to Windows 11 Home will result in the loss of features only available in the Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Education, or Windows 11 Enterprise editions.

Here's How:

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below.

Downgrade_to_Windows11-Home.reg

(contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CompositionEditionID"="Core"
"EditionID"="Core"
"ProductName"="Windows 10 Home"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CompositionEditionID"="Core"
"EditionID"="Core"
"ProductName"="Windows 10 Home"

2 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

4 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

5 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

6 Perform a repair install of Windows 11 (click on link) with a Windows 11 ISO or USB installation media from within Windows 11 and not at boot.

You can use the Media Creation Tool with Use the recommended options for this PC checked to get an ISO for this.

You will need at least 20 GB of free space on the Windows drive to perform an in-place upgrade (aka: repair install).

This will take some time to finished.

7 When the repair install has finished, you will now be downgraded to the Windows 11 Home edition without losing anything. (see screenshot below)

Windows_11_edition.png

8 If your Windows 11 Home is currently not activated by a digital license, then you will need to Change product key to a valid Windows 11 Home key to activate.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Just to confirm, did you use the REG file in step 1 first? This is what will make it think you have Home instead of Pro for the repair install.
Yes, I use it... Got confirmation that .REG file is merged into registry... But, now when you mention it, I checked actual registry and I see this for the keys values in the first entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion:

It looks like the REG didn't fully merge then since it's still showing that. You might manually double check each registry key from the REG to make sure they have been set.

Afterwards, it should hopefully do the repair install for Home instead.

Thanks a lot. Yes, will do that. Recon it will be OK to reinstall it once again? I will just end up with second windows.old folder?

Oh yes, it'll be safe and fine. It'll most likely just replace the current windows.old folder.

All right... Just to report that now it seems promising 😁... I will let it spin, and then report back when it is done... Thanks for the help!

My update

my 2nd try passed last weekend. thank Brink as well as mhamzic.
my 1st trial abortive before 100% complete when repair-install. not sure what's wrong.
posts above by Brink and mhamzic indeed hinted to try twice. hence I did re-flash Reg and re-downloaded 23H2 iso. when repair-install starts, ensure Windows 11 Home. When 100% complete. boot and start fine, no issue. present license is 23H2 Home. correct.

found the Tutorial today.

I run into this problem. Asus laptop with Windows 10 Home, installed/image restored Windows 11 Pro. need to active Home than Pro.

Thanks,

Had to take a break Shaun. I have tried every which way to download the iso and create a bootable usb using RUFUS. Eventually I decided to purchase a new Windows 11 Home Edition licence from the Microsoft Australia Store (online). But of course, trying to download to the refurbished 11 Pro machine, resulted in an 11 Pro iso. I then tried downloading using the ACER with 11 Home on it. Your workaround to trick the registry worked on the Lenovo, but the iso still couldn't run, I cannot enter the product key before install begins. I think the problem lies in there being residual "superusers" from the previous owners. I have attached the sysinfo printout, hoping that you can suggest something. Also can I easily delete the Local User account I created and use my Microsoft Account instead? Cheers Sue

Hello Sue, :-)

Usually when you're not able to enter the product key during Windows Setup, it means Windows Setup automatically detected the product key (license) embedded in the UEFI chip on the motherboard of an OEM PC (ex: Lenovo), and used it to auto select the W11 edition the key is for to install and activate.

If the Lenovo shows as activated with the W11 Pro edition, then you could continue using it if you like.

Luckily, you can easily switch the local account you created to your Microsoft account using the method in the tutorial below.
