This tutorial will show you how to downgrade from Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise to Windows 11 Home without losing anything.

You may find yourself needing or wanting to downgrade from the Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise edition to the Windows 11 Home edition.

A direct downgrade from Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise to Windows 11 Home is not supported, and would normally require a clean install of Windows 11 Home resulting in the loss of all your data.

Using a workaround in this tutorial, you can downgrade your device from Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Education, or Windows 11 Enterprise to the Windows 11 Home edition without data loss.

You must be signed in as an administrator to downgrade to the Windows 11 Home edition.

Downgrading to Windows 11 Home will result in the loss of features only available in the Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Education, or Windows 11 Enterprise editions.

Here's How:

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below.

Downgrade_to_Windows11-Home.reg

(contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CompositionEditionID"="Core"
"EditionID"="Core"
"ProductName"="Windows 10 Home"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CompositionEditionID"="Core"
"EditionID"="Core"
"ProductName"="Windows 10 Home"

2 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

4 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

5 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

6 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

7 Perform a repair install of Windows 11 (click on link) with a Windows 11 ISO or USB installation media from within Windows 11 and not at boot.

You can use the Media Creation Tool with Use the recommended options for this PC checked to get an ISO for this.

You will need at least 20 GB of free space on the Windows drive to perform an in-place upgrade (aka: repair install).

This will take some time to finish.

8 When the repair install has finished, you will now be downgraded to the Windows 11 Home edition without losing anything. (see screenshot below)

Windows_11_edition.png

9 If your Windows 11 Home is currently not activated by a digital license, then you will need to Change product key to a valid Windows 11 Home key to activate.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Big ups to you being substantially more helpful than Microsoft's official support channels and providing a truly effortless solution.

I recently did something really stupid and used a cheap Windows 11 Pro key. It didn't work, so I used a generic key, which I'm guessing doesn't work permanently. Can the method mentioned in this article be used to revert to the OEM key??

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

If the OEM key is for the Home edition, then you can use the same method.

If Windows shows as activated, you are good to go though.

i just tried this. it's back on home edition, but i tried the command prompt and it still says it's on a retail key. it looks like it didn't use the OEM key.

Kind of. I’m just worried about the gray market key being blocked at some point and losing activation. I was told the generic keys are only temporary solutions.

A generic key alone will indeed not activate Windows. You may have had a digital license tied to your account and PC used to activate it.

I joined because I need this tutorial and very happy to find it. Thank you for your time. Got phished (embarrassed), massive computer teardown by a computer tech, who installed Windows 11 Pro instead of Home. I never wanted Pro and specified Home when I bought the computer, and I wish I'd been given the option here. I can't handle another teardown to do a fresh install. Pro has caused some problems with the app I make my living with, a very small-footprint legacy program that is no longer supported. Since a 2023 update, the users of this program have known we needed to set the following command from the Windows Key/x combination by accessing settings in the window that appears for "Default terminal application" to be "Windows Console Host", and without doing that the program display scrambles; this has always been a one-time setting. Now though, due to 11 Pro, when I open the program it opens in a Powershell window every time, and the only way to stop it is to click on the down-caret/settings and give it that same command. So the program display isn't scrambling, because the original setting is holding, but a second instance of the same command will not hold and it means that every time I open an index to work on, it opens in the Powershell window. I'm changing it every time now, but it's really a mess, and I'm certain there will be other interferences from Pro that I don't need or want. My computing needs are simple. So I need to downgrade.

So, my QUESTION is: My computer currently is activated with a Pro license. Is that going to convert during this process to a Home license, or do I need to buy that again? (I had one before Windows was wiped and replaced with Pro, but I don't know what it was.)

Nota bene: I've been a freelance as a writer of back-of-the-book indexes for decades, but not a tech, so please forgive any errors of nomenclature and please explain like I'm a newbie. Thank you.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

The Pro license will not downgrade to a Home license.

If the Home license was linked to your Microsoft account for that device, your device should automatically get activated by it when setting up the same device with the same Microsoft account.

If you never had a Home license activated on that device, then you will indeed need to purchase a Home license/key.

The version and build number must be exactly the same to do an upgrade or a downgrade. That seldom happens and the default is normally a clean install.

Thank you for this information, I have hope that it will go through, and there has been no other disturbance of the Home license. I have to try because it's been almost a week and I'm still pouring hours into getting my computer and necessary apps working again. I cannot take doing it all again. I'm way behind in my work as well.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Relax, an existing digital licence for Pro will also activate Home. The digital licence hasn't been 'downgraded' by switching to Home, it activates from a Pro digital licence because Home ranks lower in the pecking order.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
