This tutorial will show you how to download an official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft.

Microsoft provides ISO files for Windows 11 to download. You can use these ISO files to clean install or in-place upgrade Windows 11.

The Flight Hub can also help you keep updated on which Windows 11 builds have an ISO available.

Contents

  • Option One: Download Latest Windows 11 ISO using Media Creation Tool
  • Option Two: Download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft
  • Option Three: Download Windows 11 Insider ISO from Microsoft
  • Option Four: Download Windows Server Insider ISO from Microsoft

Option One

Download Latest Windows 11 ISO using Media Creation Tool

This will be for a Windows 11 Version 23H2 build 22631.2861 ISO file with install.esd.

1 Click/tap on the Download button below, and click/tap on the Download Now button at Microsoft's site for Create Windows 11 Installation Media. (see screenshot below)

Windows_11_MCT-1.png

2 Save the MediaCreationTool_Win11_23H2.exe file to your desktop, and run it.

Windows_11_MCT-2.png

3 If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes.

4 Click/tap on Accept for the license terms. (see screenshot below)

Windows_11_MCT-3.png

5 Uncheck the Use the recommended options for this PC box. (see screenshot below)

Leaving the Use the recommended options for this PC box checked will have the Media Creation Tool download an ISO that's the same language, edition, and architecture as the current PC.

Windows_11_MCT-4.png

6 Select the Language and Edition you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

The Windows 11 option includes both the Home and Pro editions. The product key you enter during installation (Windows Setup) is what determines which edition gets installed.

Your digital license or product key determines if Home or Pro gets installed during Windows Setup.

If you skip entering a product key during Windows Setup, then you will be prompted to select to install the Home or Pro edition.

7 Select (dot) ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

Windows_11_MCT-5.png

8 Select where you would like to save the ISO file to, type in a name you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Save. (see screenshot below)

Well I get to point 6 and then it doesn't go any further like finding a site to put the ISO-like desktop as suggested.
At the moment I am finding even this method is just not functioning by following the tutorial.
I should have said too that trying to get the save window in this tutorial and it is just downloading it.

So you've downloaded the file and it's in your downloads? If so, right click on the file and unzip it. Open the unzipped folder and you'll see the Windows command file, right click and run as admin. It'll automatically open a CP window and start downloading and compiling itself, it'll take a while but it does it all for you. When it's done press 0 to exit, the ISO will be in the folder. Then just use something like Rufus to stick it on a Usb

Hi ICIT2LOL

I found this recent video very helpful. It explains the process from start to finish including creating the boot USB from .iso using Rufus.
I managed to create it and start the upgrade from windows as well as boot from it. I was already upgraded to Win 11 so did not perform the entire upgrade from the iso but it certainly appears to be good to go.

Hopefully it's what you are after.

Yes, from the UUP site it will appear in your DL folder when you select 'create package' This bit is very quick as it will only start doing the funky stuff after you have opened that small file and followed my previous reply

Here's the Rufus parameters I used to write the USB Boot drive - note they are different to yours in some places but importantly I am selecting an .iso image from the official MS download site mentioned in that video. I am not familiar with the UUP site download that CornishRattler was guiding you through but it may be you do not have an .iso output file on your system for Rufus to select as the input.

The other thing of note is that your Partition Scheme is showing as MBR and Target System as BIOS (or UEFI-CSM) whereas my settings show GPT and UEFI (non-CSM) which is how my system is configured. It may be that your system has to be configured for GPT/UEFI.

Here's the Rufus settings I used with the .iso downloaded from the MS Site:
(note that Brink has done a tutorial on downloading the .iso from the MS site)

Am trying to make the stick on my newest computer and I still cannot get past point 4 there is just no way that it gives me a choice of where to save it as in point 5? It looks like it is just saving it to Downloads.
Plus I cannot get Rufus to select the boot selection or partition type etc or the downloaded file from Downloads?

Why don't you just download the ISO from here.
It was posted in the opening post. It's a bit easier than UUP Dump.

Edit: Direct download link removed.

OK. I think I know what your problem is. It's not a download problem.
I don't think you're using Rufus properly.

Close Rufus and open it again so we're on the same page.
Click on "Select" and browse to your ISO. Do NOT click on the dropdown arrow.

Is that Chrome that you're using download?
Regardless. It's probably in the Windows default downloads folder. Not my preferred folder for working with files.
I don't use Windows system folders, but you can still browse to it.

I think I've bought the last DVDs I going to buy. Enterprise Class Linux distros are up to 8GB. Sadly, considering how much money I spent on them, they are about as obsolete as floppy disks. I just use rufus with 1 16GB USB drive but mostly just use any bootable ISO in a VM,

Update I have managed to play around with Rufus and have now got the ISO onto a stick. Now all I have to do is wait for a TPM module for my older computer as I have found one on eBay from New Zealand.:)

Thank you for all of the replies regarding my situation. :D

Yes Stigg I just hope my oldie will accept the install because the CPU is only a 3rd gen Ivy Bridge one the only thing missing is that TPM module.
I don't see why it shouldn't work because the CPU is really fast and reliable.

@Stigg
Well spotted Stigg (y)

@ICIT2LOL
Great news and hope the install goes ok!

Just a caution - Hope that NZ supplier can get that tpm chip to you in a timely manner.. New Zealand is in lockdown here (Covid-19) maybe for another 1-2 weeks with most businesses shut down which will likely interfere with its passage.

btw I have 2 x laptops running G7 Intel (with UEFI/Secure Boot and TPM 2.0) but not on the list of CPU's eligible for Win 11 upgrade on release and 1 x laptop Intel G6 (with UEFI/Secure Boot and TPM 1.2-which is apparently firmware upgradeable to TPM 2.0) but also not on the list of eligible CPU's. Like you, I am hoping MS lower their eligibility criteria for the upgrade.

Plan B - I have an Intel G2 onto which I have loaded Linux Mint as a distraction in the meantime :)
