I purchase a new open box Lenovo desktop computer. The specs state that it has windows HOME. I want do a clean installation of window HOME. Which iso should I download?

I want to a clean install of window 11 Home on my daughters open box computer. It had windows 11 installed by the reseller but I did not check which version of windows was installed and whether it was activated.

To be certain I did this.

I did a clean install of Home Windows 10. After this I used media creation tool to create Windows 11 Home iso. I then created a bootable win 11 home usb disk and did a clean install on the new computer.

The Multi edition win 11 iso does not give the option of choosing the windows version during installation unlike windows 10.

I am creating these USB installations on my personal computer with windows 11 PRO

That's because it found the key for the Home version in the BIOS.

With backup images it may be possible to try a generic product key.

If the trial and error installation fails activation then restore an image.

I purchased this desktop for my daughter at a huge discount because it was open box.
It came with Home edition

Lenovo IdeaCentre 3i Desktop PC - Cloud Grey (Intel Core i5-14400/16GB RAM/512GB SSD/Windows 11)

I did a complete reinstall with the Multiedition windows 11, 24H2 and it automatically installed windows home. It is therefore correct that the information is from the bios.

If anyone ever wants to bypass the BIOS version restrictions, you can edit a multi edition Windows.iso

Open notepad and enter the following

Code:

[Channel]
Retail

Save the file as ei.cfg
Place the file in the ISO sources folder.

During installation you will be asked what version of Windows you would like to install.

OR

Code:

[EditionID]
{Edition}

[Channel]
Retail

[VL]
0

Replace the line {Edition} with the Windows edition you want to install.
EditionID can be: Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education, and so on, depending on the available editions in your specific Windows ISO

For example:

Code:

[EditionID]
Home

[Channel]
Retail

[VL]
0

Channel can be changed to Retail or OEM

You can also create a pid file and pre enter your product key.

Open notepad and enter the following:

Code:

[PID]
Value=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Save the file as pid.txt
Place it into the sources folder

Replace XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX with your product key. If you don’t have a product key or you want to manually enter it later just skip creating the pid.txt file.

probably easier just from a multi edition Windows iso simply to enter the default product key for the edition you want to install or your own product key.

The default keys are available all over the web and are public domain so no piracy. You still need to activate with your own key after install.

I don't think though this gets round the hardware requirements or having to do registry changes / OOBE commands. For that on a new install just use dism.exe with index=n where n is the W11 version you want to install e.g index=1 w11 home etc.

Relating to this thread (I know the result was what was wanted due to the version embedded)
If the BIOS has the version embedded and you want to bypass that version, you need to do the above if you want to bypass the embedded requirements

It isn’t about hardware requirements though?

I’m pretty sure the post I made stands true, not discarding other methods.

To create the pid file you have to extract the iso to be able to enter data, select the right folder and enter the text -- and if you make an error then ???? .

It's IMHO much easier just to leave untouched the "bog standard" multi-edition" iso and at prompt for product key when running the install enter your own or the default product key for the version you want.

I'm not a big fan of "tampering" with the bog standard iso's -- but of course each to their own. !!

Jim, on a laptop with an embedded version, there’s no option of what to install. If the embedded version is home then you get home.

And in that instance, I believe that if you tried using a key for pro, it’s at some point going to tell you it’s the wrong key.

I’ll say it again, there’s nothing wrong with the method I posted.

Wrong windows version given by Microsoft after install

It isn't a problem, because I used my Windows 10 upgrade key from Home to Pro and Windows 11 accepted it and upgraded. But I am wondering why the completed fresh installation gave me Windows 11 Home instead of Windows 11 Pro when the laptop was in fact noted on my Microsoft accounts digital...
