Solved Drive Letters for Removable USB drives

I'm expeiencing changes to removeable USB drive letters between ejecting and next re-inserting at some later date - almost everytime it reverts to next free unused letter, but not necessarily so.

Can anyone offer a solution?

Have you tried manually assigning them a unused drive letter?

It always does that if its assigned drive letter is already used when it is connected.
But you have not said if that applies to your case.

Yes - using 'Disk Management'

The drive DOES NOT have a drive letter in use when connected

This happens if first time is assigned letter D, for example, but next time you connect it D is taken by a different drive. So File Explorer assigns the next free letter, say E. To always take the same letter make sure no other device uses the letter when you connect it. Also if you manually assign a specific letter, say J, then every time you connect it will be letter J unless some other device uses it.

The USB in question (should always) be V - see post #01 - and if not I reset it toV

No other device is assigned letter V.

It's been a very long time since I manually assigned a drive letter to a USB drive but that's exactly how I remember it working. I wonder if this is something that MS has changed in Widows 11.

No, there's no change...USB drives are assigned the drive letter you assigned (unless already in use).

I allow myself to attach up to two "transient" USB drives (D: and E:) at the same time. Thus, for my USB drive that I use for my local backups, I have it assigned as F: and this drive letter assignment strategy has not failed over the years.

Change the drive letter to V manually from Disk Manager. Remove the drive and connect it again. It should be letter V. Make sure no other device is letter V, also no network path is mapped to letter V.

Drive letter assignments still work the same as they always have, at least for me. I have two 4TB external SSD drives that only get plugged in once a month, I stuck them down at locations U: and V:. I have backup runs configured for them at those drive locations, and they've never wandered from their assignments from month to month. I never have to tinker with their drive letter assignments from month to month, I just plug them in.

Most of my USB flash drives are assigned letter E, then next available after my SSD and BD-R drive, when used alone. But if I have already plugged one and has taken drive E and then I plug another, it will take letter F. Then this particular drive will always be F unless I manually change the letter to E again.
