Windows Update Enable or Disable Get Latest Updates as soon as available in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22621.1635, Microsoft added a new "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" toggle under Settings > Windows Update.

When you turn it on, Microsoft will prioritize your device to get the latest non-security updates and enhancements when they are available for your device.

Some of these updates may also be available in Optional updates to manually install if not available to automatically download and install from Windows Update.

Option One

Turn On or Off "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" in Settings


1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Windows Update on the left side. (see screenshot below)


3 Turn On or Off (default) Get the latest updates as soon as they're available for what you want. (see screenshot below)

4 You can now close Settings if you like.

Option Two

Turn On or Off "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" using REG file


You must be signed in as an administrator to use this option.


1 Do step 2 (on) or step 3 (off) below for what you would like to do.

2 Turn On "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available"

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

This is the default setting.


A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

Hi Brink maybe can answer this?
How would I do the oppistie here and GRAY this toggle out for my users.
I used =0 and it works to turn the setting off each time group policy applies.
Id like to enforce it off so they cant turn it on and receive broken updates from Microsoft

I haven't seen a group policy available yet for this specific setting that would make it easy to do this.

That would be for the same registry changes in option two of the tutorial made by the toggle in Settings > Windows Update in option one.

The setting is disabled on managed devices by default though. I don't see anything that would manage this specific setting though.

The toggle won't be enabled for managed devices (those that are managed by Windows Update for Business or WSUS). The latest changes will be controlled and deployed by IT administrators.

I pushed this setting via GPO
It creates the key and keeps it 0, turning it off after the user turns excitedly turns it on, but does not gray it out. I want it to be grEy, like you. =)

I think that's about all you can do for now until Microsoft releases a specific GPO for this. :(

The only version that doesn't have the toggle is the original build 22000 (21H2).
Even the 22H2 General Release channel should have it now.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Hi Zinoview and 11forum. I have been wondering about this since installing Win11. Can anyone shed light on this? I read the reply from Brink and the link supplied but the question was not really answered. Sorry in advance if i missed something. My thoughts are i would love to try out new features asap as long as it is not going to break my install.
Has anyone here enabled this option and what has been the experience?

is that correct or are something wrong with the settings!.. i was on 23h2 before i went do insider DEV

the TargetReleaseVersionInfo is set to 25H1 in regestry?

As a test, use the Undo_specify_target_Feature_Update_version.reg file in step 3 of option two below to see if this will no longer be grayed out afterwards.

You will still stay on getting Dev builds. The REG file just removed the specify target feature update policy.

But Build 22h2 Dev build seems more stable than the 23h2 General one! or it's maybe placebo :wink:
