Browsers and Mail Enable or Disable Save Passwords and Passkeys in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable "Ask to save passwords and passkeys" and "Add password" to the password manager in Microsoft Edge for your account or all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Microsoft Edge makes it easy to save your passwords as you browse the web. When you enter a new password in the Edge browser on your desktop or mobile device, Microsoft Edge Ask to save passwords feature by default will ask if you want your username and password saved. The next time you visit the site, the browser will finish filling in your account info. If you’re signed into Edge with your Microsoft account, these passwords sync by default and become available across all of your signed in devices.

You can also manually add passwords for sites in the password manager in Microsoft Edge.

You can turn on or off Ask to save passwords and passkeys and/or the ability to manually Add password in the password manager for sites in Microsoft Edge. If turned off or disabled, you can still use previously saved passwords and passkeys.

EXAMPLE: "Ask to save passwords" and "Add password" in Microsoft Edge

This option doesn't affect the ability to manually Add password for sites to the password manager in Edge.

1 Open Microsoft Edge.

2 Click/tap on the Settings and more (Alt+F) 3 dots menu icon, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)


3 Click/tap on Passwords and autofill in the left pane, and click/tap on Microsoft Password Manager in the right pane. (see screenshot below)

If you do not see a left pane, then either click/tap on the 3 bars menu button towards the top left OR widen the horizontal borders of the Microsoft Edge window until you do.

4 Turn On (default) or Off Ask to save password and passkeys for what you want. (see screenshot below)


5 You can now close the Settings tab in Microsoft Edge if you like.

You must be signed in as an administrator to use this option.

This option uses the PasswordManagerEnabled and PasswordManagerPasskeysEnabled policies for Microsoft Edge.

1 Do step 2 (always enable), step 3 (disable), or step 4 (default) below for what you want.

This will prevent turning off "Ask to save passwords" in Option One, and enable the "Add password" button in the password manager in Edge.

This will prevent turning on "Ask to save passwords and passkeys" in Option One, and will disable (gray out) the "Add password" button in the password manager in Edge.

This is the default setting to allow turning on/off "Ask to save passwords and passkeys" in Option One, and enable the "Add password" button in the password manager in Edge.

5 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

6 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

7 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

8 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

9 If Microsoft Edge is currently open, then close and reopen Microsoft Edge to apply.

10 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.
