Virtualization Enable or Disable Windows Sandbox in Windows 11

Windows_Sandbox_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the Windows Sandbox feature for all users in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education.

Windows Sandbox provides a lightweight desktop environment to safely run applications in isolation. Software installed inside the Windows Sandbox environment remains "sandboxed" and runs separately from the host machine.

A sandbox is temporary. When it's closed, all the software and files and the state are deleted. You get a brand-new instance of the sandbox every time you open the application.

Software and applications installed on the host aren't directly available in the sandbox. If you need specific applications available inside the Windows Sandbox environment, they must be explicitly installed within the environment.

Windows Sandbox has the following properties:
  • Part of Windows: Everything required for this feature is included in Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. There's no need to download a VHD.
  • Pristine: Every time Windows Sandbox runs, it's as clean as a brand-new installation of Windows.
  • Disposable: Nothing persists on the device. Everything is discarded when the user closes the application.
  • Secure: Uses hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation. It relies on the Microsoft hypervisor to run a separate kernel that isolates Windows Sandbox from the host.
  • Efficient: Uses the integrated kernel scheduler, smart memory management, and virtual GPU.
Using Windows Sandbox
  1. To start Windows Sandbox (if enabled), open the Start menu, enter Windows Sandbox and then select it.
  2. When prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes.
  3. Copy (Ctrl+C) an executable file from the host.
  4. Paste (Ctrl+V) the executable file in the window of Windows Sandbox (on the Windows desktop).
  5. Run the executable in the Windows Sandbox; if it is an installer go ahead and install it.
  6. Run the application in the Windows Sandbox and use it as you normally do.
  7. When you’re done experimenting, you can simply close the Windows Sandbox application, and click/tap on OK to confirm. All sandbox content will be discarded and permanently deleted.
Starting with Windows 11 build 22483, Windows Sandbox now works on ARM64 PCs.

Reference;

You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable and use Windows Sandbox.

It is required to have Virtualization enabled in your UEFI/BIOS settings to enable Windows Sandbox. You can confirm if Virtualization is enabled in Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).

The Sandbox is a great way to play with Windows 11 settings without messing anything up

Hello mate, :)

Windows Sandbox is not available in the Windows 11 Home edition if that's what you have installed.

I knew it was too good to be true since when I said the above, I meant it successfully installed. I didn't know that it didn't work as you had mentioned on tenforums.

I thought that I would give the sandbox a try and after a couple of seconds all I get is this..

Screenshot 2021-09-04 121810.png

I've tried running it normally and as an administrator, have virtualization enabled, rebooted and followed the steps in Brinks guide, but no joy. I've tried googling the problem but still no joy.

I'm on 22449.1000 but as I haven't used the sandbox before I have no idea if it it is broken in this build or if it's only broken for me.

I had a search through the forum and spotted that someone else mentioned that it is broken for them (albeit a different build) so can anyone tell me if the sandbox works for them in this build please?

Many thanks

Bill

Hello @Bill4321, :-)

It looks like it may be a bug with build 22449 from below. It's still working for me in build 22000.168 Dev channel.

[Windows Sandbox]
We’re investigating an issue in which Windows Sandbox may not launch for some Insiders after upgrading to this build.

I've just checked and it's working fine for me (beta channel) which channel are you in?
Hello @Bill4321, :)

It looks like it may be a bug with build 22449 from below. It's still working for me in build 22000.168 Dev channel.

[Windows Sandbox]
We’re investigating an issue in which Windows Sandbox may not launch for some Insiders after upgrading to this build.

Hello chaps

I'm on the DEV channel and going from what Brink has posted above I'll just hang on for a bit and see if things iron themselves out.

Thanks for taking the time out to reply, much appreciated :)

Cheers

Bill

Glad to report that I hung about a bit and things have ironed themselves out in build 22463, all working fine (y)

The release notes suggested that it was fixed but I'm ususally a bit sceptical..!

I have an asus fx505dt-wb52 with windows 11 pro installed the steps I take
1. Make sure svm is enabled in bios (by doing so make my video ram in bios go from 128 to 512)
2. Boot up to the desktop and enable/install windows sandbox
3. I wait for it to complete and restart the computer
4. After I get passed the post screen the screen just stays back..would you happen to know why that is or how to fix it Brink?

Hello, :-)

You could try restarting the explorer process like below to see if that may be the issue.

As a test, turn off Fast Startup below to see if that may have been the cause of this. It can sometimes cause a blank screen at startup like this.
