Solved Error: "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore...."

Hi,
It shows 3 because your boot files are on C not the efi partition where they should be
C is system not boot for me
Boot is on the fat32 260mb partition in my case 2 I believe.

Free minitool shows efi as boot for me
Disk management will also show boot files on C
Both are obviously system partitions so there is just a little clash in your readings between the two apps.

enum the recoverysequence

bcdedit -enum {identifier}

or you could do the following

bcdedit -enum all

easier to read through and copy and paste from if you output it to a textfile

bcdedit -enum all >%userprofile%\desktop\bcdout.txt

Not according to that readout it shows 6 lol
efi is the 2nd partition on C
Guessing it's counting the partitions on disk2 my data disk as well first ?

Could you upload a screenshot of disk management where the Recovery partition is visible. Also note that many manufacturers like HP use them own Recovery partition. Maybe it is ? How you know if the visible recovery partition is WinRE or other ? I have. You were so quick to reply that I had...

When i boot to WinRE from Windows USB installation , or F11 , or shift+restart , there is not my C: (or with other letter).
Is that normal ?

Well yes and no
If you refer to your minitool screen shot and compare it to mine you'll see the difference I mentioned earlier
Here is yours from post #4 showing boot is on C

Here's mine showing boot is on the fat32 efi partition

So these are different
Not with standing windows system imaging or recovery sux so nobody should be really using it hehe
I only use third party apps for this.
Macrium reflect to be exact although there are many.

Hi,
Not really but this is what stuck out as interesting to me when all was being discussed
That and the RE being somewhere other than at the end of C partition

I believe these two differences aren't helping windows recovery and like I said it sux and should not be used.

Personally if interested I'd clean install windows and use a system image of current install and drag and drop the existing C partition on the clean installs C partition hehe

I did it man it freaking works.
Macrium reflect free rocks :boom:

So first step is download and install reflect free
Create the winpe recovery flash media
Use it to create a system image on a different disk.

Then install windows again.
after boot to your recovery media
Select restore image
Point it to the disk where the system image is
Once you see both drag the system image C onto the clean install C
Then wait
You will need to use reflect again and use it's startup repair because of the conflicting boot files now but reflect will sort it out for you.
Nothing on C will change but at least all partitions will be as they should be except C of course nothing changes on it except reflect fixing the boot entries

Disk management will still see C as boot just like it does for me as well.

The system restore point will not repair BCD error far as i know, you need to rebuild BCD store file.

Those are two different partition managers.

Aomei follows MS convention. System contains the boot critical files. Boot is the partition currently booted into.

Most 3rd party programs for windows will follow MS naming. I havent got paragon, easeus etc in front of me atm, but I expect they do the same.

Minitool names them the other way
