Solved Error: "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore...."


Ok so minitool has changed to using ms naming. That is why they are different.

When i boot at WinPE or WinRE via USB or F11 or shift+restart i havent C:
When i run rstrui.exe /offline:X:\Windows i take an error ".....incorrect parameter error 0x80070057".

There is no C: drive. I take error.

Update :
1) I have C: when i boot from EaseUS or AOMEI media
2) I dont have C: when i boot at WinRE via F11 or Shift+Restart or Windows USB installation media.
It looks like all WinREs are problematic.

Take up that offer. SIW2 is highly competent.

I still think you should make a new system image of the disk with your OS on it then clean install then restore your image's C:\ drive to the C:\ partition of the new installation.
I know you said you did not want to do that several days ago & tens of posts ago.
I think you are otherwise going to go round in circles unless any existing posts take you straight to a solution [you've all been so busy overnight, in my time, that I'm still reading through all the new posts].

In those environments, go to the Command prompt and run the command Notepad, then
File,
Open...,
ThisPC
and you'll see all your drives listed with the drive letters that the environment is using for them.
Every environment makes its own decisions about what drive letters to use; nothing you see affects what your installed Windows will call them after you reboot.

Please replace partition letter X: with Windows installed partition letter. When the computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment, the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1, 10 and Windows11 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assigned any other drive letter, usually D: drive letter is assigned to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit | find "osdevice" command can be used to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition, the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Update : now also the image restore not works. It gives errors :
1) "Image restore failed. Windows did not detect a disk that can be used to recreate volumes that are in the backup. Offline disks are cluster shared disks or disks that are explicitly excluded from the...........".
2) 0x80070057 or 0x80070002 (not sure cause .......... i got many now.)

Which aomei boot media have you got?

If you downloaded the winpe creating files from aomei it has explorer and disk management, etc. Cant remember if if it has something to take screenshots.

You can borrow my boot media ➡️ 23v7.iso

the above .iso is best extracted to usb stick.

Please trust me friend. I told ya , there is no OS disk when i use WinRE.
And i think thats the cause of all problems. How the system could perforrestore points or image backups when the OS disk doesnt exist ?

Only with EaseUS and AOMEI appears.

your winre.wim might be missing the rst drivers so it cant see the disk.

aomei and easeus boot media must have them included.

my boot media has slightly newer versions of both drivers, so i expect it will work. Pretty sure i included them, will check
