Recently I tried to connect a Windows 11 laptop to a shared printer on the network (it's a Brother MFC-7340 shared on another Windows 11 PC). I installed the drivers on the server computer and I am able to print from it using the USB connection. On the client computer, when I try to connect I IMMEDIATELY get an error that it cannot be installed. The details show error 0x0000011b.

So far, everything I found on the internet has to do with a Microsoft update (KB5005655) but that update is NOT on the two machines I'm getting this error on. I tried doing the registry method as well and it didn't work.

I see nothing in the event logs about this failure to install so I am only able to go on this error code. Can anyone offer suggestions how to get past this error and get this printer installed?

You are trying this the wrong way I think. After the printer on your host is working and shared, you need to look for the shared printer before you install the drivers on the client computer.

Here is a guide from MS

If you can't find or connect to the share, then check your network settings that both computers are using your connection as private network and enable file and printer sharing on both computers in network settings.

That is what I'm doing.

I already checked they are on the private network and enabled sharing on both of them.

I installed the drivers on the server computer and I am able to print from it using the USB connection.
I'm unclear if the printer is still connected with a usb connection. If it is still connected to to the server computer rather than being wireless, try installing it this way.

Step 1 Open the "Start" menu on the computer directly connected to the printer and click "Control Panel," "Printers and Other Hardware" and then "Printers and Faxes."

Step 2 Right-click on the printer's icon and click "Sharing."

Step 3 Click the "Sharing" tab and press "Share As." Type in any name for the printer to identify it to other users on the network.

Step 4 (Do this step only if drivers are not already installed on secondary computer)Push "Additional Drivers" if any computers on the network use a different operating system than the computer attached to the printer. Follow the prompts to pick the extra drivers to install. If you're missing any drivers for another operating system, users printing from that system will have to install them on their end instead.

Step 5 Click "Ok," or "Close" if you installed additional drivers.

On the secondary computer on the network

Step 1
Open the "Start" menu and click "Control Panel," "Printers and Other Hardware" and then "Printers and Faxes."

Step 2 Click "Add a Printer" under "Printer Tasks" and press "Next" to start the Add Printer Wizard.

Step 3 Select the option labeled "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer" and click "Next."

Step 4 Click "Connect to this printer" and type in the location of the printer in the format "\\Computer\Printer," where "Computer" is the network name of the computer attached to the printer, and "Printer" is the name given to the printer during sharing. You can also browse the network to locate the printer instead.

Step 5 Press "Next" and wait while the setup finishes. After it completes, close the window and print a test from the shared printer to ensure it works.

The printer is connected via USB. I have done all those steps and I'm still getting the error message from the first post.

Try this. This suggestion came from Microsoft. This has to be done on both the print server and the client computers.
Press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box. Next, type ‘regedit’ inside the text box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open up the Registry Editor with administrative privileges.

After you’re inside the Registry Editor, use the menu on the left to navigate to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print
(backup this key before going any further by clicking FILE-EXPORT name it and save it somewhere)

Once you’re inside the correct location, ensure that the Print key is selected on the left, then move over to the right-hand section, right-click on an empty space and select New > 32-bit) DWORD Value.
  • name the newly created registry value as RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled and press Enter to save the changes.
  • Finally, double-click on the newly created RpcAuthnLevelPrivacyEnabled value.
  • Once you’re inside the Edit menu, set the Base to Hexadecimal and the Value data to 0 before clicking Ok to save the changes.
Once this modification has been complete, restart your PC and repeat the action that was previously causing the 0x0000011b.
