Windows 11 Pro 64-bit
Some background: my Dell XPS 8930 PC froze when I had it on for a few days, and when I couldn’t get any movement out of it, I decided to reinstall Windows 11. I had Windows 11 previously and I have no idea why it froze on me.

Now when I try to reinstall it from an .iso image on a usb stick or DVD the installation freezes.

I installed Windows 11 on my Dell Inspiron laptop and it had no such problem.

Maybe I have to enter a Product Key before I attempt to install it?

I ordered a Windows 11 Pro 64-bit Full Version DVD from Amazon, but I haven’t received it yet.

Welcome to ElevenForum!

Could you possibly provide a little bit more detail? When you say that the installation freezes, could you tell us at exactly what point in the installation it freezes? Is it at the same point every time or does it vary? When it freezes, what do you see? Does the screen go blank, or does it simply seem to go no further and get stuck on a particular screen? Can you get Windows Setup to respond at all - for example, if you press SHIFT + F10 at this point does a command prompt open or does nothing at all happen?

Also, could you tell us what procedure you used to create the USB stick or the DVD disc?

EDIT: Forgot to ask: You noted that you had Windows 11 on the system previously and it froze on you. Would it come back up successfully after a reboot or were you no longer able to run Windows from that point on? If so, what exactly would you see after a reboot and where would it fail?

Thanks for the reply, hsehedtedt.

It seems to freeze at approximately the same point every time, the last time at the 40% mark of the setup screen, after I loaded all of the features from the disc with the .iso image on it and I loaded them onto my computer. When it restarted, the setup stopped at 40%.

I haven’t tried pressing Shift + F10, but I will try that.

And I used the link in post #4 in this thread

to create the dvd (actually, it’s a BD).

And after it froze the first time, I just pressed the power button until it turned off, because there was no other way to reboot. And when I turned it back on (after waiting 30 seconds, don’t know if that’s necessary anymore) Windows wouldn’t load, just freeze before I get to the sign-in page.

One addition: after launching the console window by Shift+F10, run the Task Manager taskmgr.exe, then click More details to see all active tasks (there should be only a few in this installation environment, comparing to fully installed system). When the installer "freezes", you will be able to see whether only the installer task became unresponsive or the Task Manager is freezes too and doesn't respond to mouse commands. This may give you an idea of what happened, like a system crash, a driver incompatibility etc.

P.S. Installer environment doesn't support Explorer and looking at the file system using console commands isn't quite easy, but you can run Notepad from command line (notepad.exe), then File, Open command brings you Explorer-like file system window.

We can delete all partitions and create partition to install Windows 11 maybe this way Windows 11 will install without freezing.

Open Command Prompt by pressing Shift+F10 keys.

From Command Prompt, execute the following commands:

Code:
Diskpart

list disk

select disk n

clean

create partition primary

format fs=NTFS

assign letter=C

exit

Replace n letter with disk number you want to delete all partitions and create new one.

Try installing Windows 11 on C partition.

It's a good advice if the installer is launched from Windows for upgrade, but if it is started from ISO, it already uses Administrator account. Which may be not enough to keep or delete some existing files to free the space, if the supposed OS drive is not empty. Sometimes the installer refuses to work at all because it counts the drive write-protected and cannot format it or delete an old partition, so need to manually change this from command line using diskpart. But the source of current problem is somehow different.

Okay, I'm going to ask for further clarification because what I have thus far is about as clear as mud :-)

You said that the freeze is happening "at the 40% mark of the setup screen, after I loaded all of the features from the disc with the .iso image on it and I loaded them onto my computer. When it restarted, the setup stopped at 40%.".

Please confirm: Am I correct in assuming that this means that you are starting the setup process from within Windows and that you are not booting from the BD disc?

The reason I ask: When you boot from the media, there is only one point during the installation where a percentage of completion is shown and that is BEFORE the first reboot whereas you reference 40% completion AFTER reboot.

Could you clarify also where things stand at this time - has Windows setup rolled back the changes and are you able to get into Windows now or are we at a point where you can no longer get into Windows?

If you can no longer get into Windows, then my suggestion would be to proceed as below. Otherwise, I have other suggestions that I will provide if you indicate that you can still get into Windows:

NOTE: For future reference, if you are going to install the same version of Windows while inside of Windows, I would suggest other methods, but we can discuss those later.

1) Start the installation by booting from the BD disc or a thumb drive with Windows installation media. Since your attempt to perform an in-place upgrade is failing, we may not have much other choice. Be aware that this will erase everything on the Windows volume, and you will need to reinstall your drivers and apps after installing Windows.

2) Proceed through the installation up to the point where you are asked what disk to install onto. Remove all the partitions from the Windows drive until that disk shows only unallocated space, then select that unallocated space as the location to which Windows should be installed.

3) Continue through the installation responding to prompts as they are presented until Windows is fully installed.

4) Install your drivers, reboot, install apps.

I have to press F12 when I start the computer and a screen pops up asking me where I want to boot from. I choose from the dvd drive and the computer shows the press any key to boot from a dvd prompt and that’s what I do. It starts the installation process, loads everything, and reboots to begin setup and that’s when it freezes at 40%.

I have an old Windows 10 Pro 64 bit installation dvd and it loads and sets up just fine, but I can’t get any Wi-Fi to work on it, either from the built-in Wi-Fi or a Netgear wn300 Wi-Fi adapter I have.

It did the same thing with a USB stick I have with Windows 11 on it.

When I have windows 10 installed on the computer it freezes when I attempt to install Wi-Fi drivers.

It did the same thing with a USB stick I have with Windows 11 on it.

When I have windows 10 installed on the computer it freezes when I attempt to install Wi-Fi drivers.
Well maybe that's also the point where the Win 11 installation fails. When it tries to install those drivers. Do you have an uncommon wi-fi chip? Or maybe the Wi-fi has failed.

I don’t think so.

I ordered an Ethernet cable from Amazon that will reach my AT&T modem, maybe that will work.
