Pertinent Information

I'm on DEV Channel Windows 11 Build 22458.1000. I'm also on the Insider Beta Channel for Microsoft 365.

Both Desktop and Laptop have Build 22458.1000 installed. Microsoft 365 14517.20000 is installed on both systems.

I have a Toshiba external drive I can move back and forth between the two systems.

And the Problem

I have a Student Membership List created in Excel on the Toshiba External.

When the Toshiba External is attached to my desktop, and I want to refer to the Membership List, it has somehow been changed from Excel to Notepad! If I click on the "notepad file", of course, I get gibberish. However, I can "open with" Excel and everything is OK. I try saving the file as an Excel file, and it saves as a Notepad file. Yes, I've made sure that "save as" is on Excel.

I've changed the Toshiba External over to the Laptop, checked to see what my Membership file looks like, and it's perfectly fine and has been saved as an Excel file!

What I've Done to Solve the Situation

I have gone into Settings to be sure Excel is the default spreadsheet app, and yes, it is. I've checked Notepad and it doesn't have any "spreadsheet" default marked.

At this point, I'm about to pull my hair out! At first I thought it might be a Windows 11 bug, but I'm pretty sure that's not true.

As stated above, both systems have identical Build numbers for both Windows 11 and Microsoft 365. I've even gone so far as to check my Word files, and everything's fine on both systems.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Make sure you have "Fine name extension" turned on in Explorer (View, Show). Then browse the folder where the file is stored. It should show up with an extension of .xls or .xlsx. This may give you a hint to what is happening.

Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Choose defaults by file type (you'll find it the 'Related settings' at the bottom of Default apps). Type .xls in the search box. Make sure .xls and .xlsx are set for Excel (or in my case LibreOffice Calc) if it's set for Notepad then change it.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Hi @Wynona

I'm not offering solution. But have you done the most primitive way we use to do?
After making sure the file extension is appropriate.

First, take a glance at file's property.

Second, click open with -> open with anothe apps => choose app, and fill check mark

It just part of routine ruling out steps.

No, I've never, ever, ever, ever, had to tell Microsoft to open a file with the app it had been created with. For some odd reason, my extension had been removed. And I don't know why. I also had a problem with Outlook being taken offline.

Probably the idiot in front of the monitor . . . I'll never know for sure.

Well. Accident happens.
Glad you solved it.
For the given reason, many of us use to set to always show file extension just to make sure if in case the extension doesn't match the file's icon. But sure it needs to be more cautious when renaming file(s) not to accidentally mess up with the extension. 😄

Show file extensions is the first thing I do after a clean installation.
We mostly do.
But I never suggest it out to people around me as it also has it's risks.

Couldn't imagine if s'one has his/her few-year-old file(s) accidentally lost the extension and unable to recall it. It takes multiple attempt to put back the appropriate one.

Yeah, the user has to understand file extensions and when naming or re-naming files not to delete the dot and extension, but I couldn't live without seeing extensions. I think it's safer to be able to see the extension. Especially when downloading stuff.

It's true.
From some angles, seeing the extension truly help spotting any unwanted or malicious file upon download.
Kind of lost in the dark for not having an eye at the extension.
