Explorer hangup in downloads folder when browsing

This problem exists for years and no updates solve it. How to fix this problem ?

It hangs because Windows Defender always scans that folder after a fresh restart, when accassing it the first time. Times after that it should be faster.
Keeping the folder more empty and without exe files etc will speed it upgain.
Onces files are scanned and check in download folder, you can move the files to other foldes, and those folder, you migh want to exclude from the windows defender scans.

I had to disable showing thumbnails and show only icons to be able to open the folder

That could mean corrupted thumbnail on one of the media files.

You shouldn't have to do that unless you're running a really useless processor and little memory.
