Got an M.2 NVME SSD drive I put into an enclosure adaptor to connect to pc via usb

It shows on disk management "Disk 1 unknown not initialized" but when I right click and initialize, I then get the message "the request failed due to a fatal device hardware error"
Googling around, it seems like initializing a disk can fix this error, but this error appears when I am trying to initialize it.
It isn't recognised in My PC, I assume because it is not yet formatted

This is the enclosure I'm using Simplecom SE509 NVMe (M Key) M.2 SSD to USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB-C 10Gbps Enclosure - External Enclosure - Storage and Docking
And this is the SSD I have in it Crucial P2 1TB PCIe M.2 2280SS SSD | CT1000P2SSD8 | Crucial.com

This indicates that either the adapter doesn't work as expected, so Windows cannot access the disk properly, or the disk is faulty. Have you tested the disk on another computer? If it is under Warranty, you could return to the shop and ask the Service Department to test it and replace it. The same with the adapter. I would also try to do it in command prompt with Diskpart, but most likely it will also fail and I would not recommend it because you could easily make a mistake and delete your Windows disk instead.

Should you are brave enough to take the risk, right click on the Start button, select Windows Terminal as Administrator and try this code:

diskpart
list disk
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary

The first line loads Diskpart. The second lists all hard disks. The third selects disk 1 (which according to your screenshot is the disk you want). The fourth line wipes any data on disk, like you first bought it. The fifth line creates a single partition on the whole disk. You can then go to Disk Manager again and check your results.

I also run into the same problem. I have a new Crucial P3 SSD 2TB NVMe CT2000P3SSD8 inside a RaidSonic Icy Box IB-1807MT-C31 USB 3.2 Gen 2 with up to 10 Gbit/s. When I connect the device with the supplied Type-C to Type-C cable on a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port (on several computers) I cannot initialize the disk.

diskpart.jpg

diskmanagment.jpg

Strange think is that when i connect the external drive on a USB 2 port I can initialize it, format it and use it!!!

diskmanagment2.jpg

CrystalDiskInfo shows no S.M.A.R.T. issues...

crystaldiskinfo.jpg

The external drive will only work at USB 2 speeds. When I connect it back to USB 3.2 port it still shows up as "Not Initialized" and gives the "The Request Failed Due to A Fatal Device Hardware Error" error message. If I reconnect it on a USB 2 port it is back online and usable!

I do not have a spare M2 disk or a tower PC to test the Crucial P3 SSD 2TB NVMe.

You must update your USB or chipset drivers to make the USB 3.2 ports work properly, unless they are damaged. Also see if they are properly configured in BIOS.

What types of USB ports are available and which were tested?

Had the HD enclosure been tested on another computer?
Had the new SSD been tested on another computer?

If you boot to the BIOS is the drive seen?

See if you can find a friend, neighbor, relative or local computer store to initialize the drive.

He said that the drive works in USB 2.0 ports but not at USB 3.2 ports. This means that the drive is OK and is recognised in USB 2.0 ports for which Windows install drivers automatically. USB 3.0 or higher ports are not always detected automatically and you may have to manually download the drivers. Go at manufacturer's support site and download the USB drivers.

There are many causes of a non-initialized for an initialized drive.
Corrupt/ Incompatible/Outdated Driver
MBR Corruption
Missing or lost partition
Bad Sectors
Corrupt File System
Problems with a USB port
Problems with a cable
etc.

The link displayed: Plug and play, no drivers required

Yes, no drivers required for the USB devices, provided the USB port works properly. If it doesn't work it needs drivers. Make the port work properly first and then plug any device without additional drivers.

My primary laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 16ACH6 running Win 11 22H2. It has all current updates and drivers and I also use Lenovo Service Bridge. Just in case, I reinstalled the drivers myself. BIOS is also up to date. I also tried the external SSD on other USB 3.2 capable PCs. On a Lenovo ThinkPad T490 Laptop and on a Apple MacBook Pro. I'm quite certain that is not a driver related problem. As I said before, I do not have access to a tower PC that I can test the M.2 NVMe SSD.

All equipment (Laptop, SSD, external case) are newly purchased. The crazy think is that the SDD works fine on USB 2 ports or USB 2 hubs connected to USB 3 ports or on USB 3 ports with USB 2 cable!!!

The specs of the two enclosures mentioned in this thread don´t identify the chip (USB bridge) used. It´s strange, usually this information is provided. I have a Sabrent enclosure of the same type which uses the Realtek RTL9210B chip. It works well, no problems.

Neither enclosures nor USB 10G ports should need any special drivers. These devices are plug-and-play.

As I said before, the enclosure is plug and play, no drivers needed, provided the computer USB ports work properly. If the USB ports don't work properly, you must update the USB 3.0 drivers or the chipset drivers or both.

SOLUTION:
The problematic RaidSonic Icy Box IB-1807MT-C31 was returned to the store. Fabler2 was right. RaidSonic does not recognize equipment defects and blames PCs, Laptops and Drivers as the source of the problem. So instead of taking the time to conduct a proper QC on their products, they just ship out garbage... :censored:

I then decided to find an NVMe Enclosure that states the internal chipset. The obvious choices are:
Realtec RTL9210
ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM2362
JMicron JMS583

I found the LLC-M2-C-MULTI-2 - M.2 SSD Enclosure (NVMe & SATA) with RTL9210B. Thank you Anibor_11. Not an easy to find chipset . Guess what... It worked! :-)

I bough 3 NVMe SSD enclosures through a Kickstarter campaign, and they've been good to me so far. The cables were crap, but using my own cables they've been pretty reliable.

hello there,

Resurrecting this thread, so i got a UGREEN NVMe M.2 Enclosure with Sandisk SSD and it's not working, this is my Disk Management:

UGREEN NVMe M.2 Enclosure USB 3.2 NVMe SSD Case Adapter with Cooling Pad 10Gbps for NVMe PCIe M-Key/M+B Key in 2230/2242/2260/2280 with USB CC and AC Cable Tool-Free

Sandisk X400 SSD M.2 2280 256GB
SD8SNBU-256G-1002 FW: X4131002

Initialize Disk, either options returns:

1690919746394.png

I've just tried what mentioned here, including trying different USB ports and same story, also on my Win10 laptop, same story. I don't think the SSD is fried.

The device uses this:

1690919794317.png

PC is all up to date and all drivers installed, chipset etc... i could of course put the SSD inside my desktop PC but for now i wanted to test it on the enclosure.

OH fun fact: i tried to plug the enclosure WITHOUT the SSD inserted in the slot, and it's exactly the same... i think something's not right here???

Also tested on 2 laptops, don't have any USB 2.0 ports anymore.

Any suggestions?

thank you

You'll need USB 3 posts for speed, otherwise it won't be worth anything, and IIRC< a USB 2.0 port may not have enough voltage to supply to the unit to have it working correctly.

You'll want ot test the SSD independently of the enclosure, because the enclosure showing the same thing with and without the SSD would, to me, indicate that hte enclosure is working and the SSD is not working. Testing the SSD in the PC directly will help ascertain if it is bad or not.

I had a similar issue with an external BD-R XL drive. I connected to a USB 2.0 port in my system (2nd PC specs) and couldn't properly read an UHD Blu Ray disc (aka 4K Blu Ray disc). Changing to another USB 2.0 port made no difference. Then I connected a PCIe to USB 3.0 card to my computer as it doesn't have onboard USB 3.0 ports, and connected the BD-R XL drive there. It had no problem reading the UHD Blu Ray disc and playing the movie.

I think you have the same issue. You have a USB 3.0 device which doesn't work properly in a USB 2.0 port. You have to test it on a computer with USB 3.0 ports and if still doesn't work, return it for a replacement under Warranty.
