So I boot my Windows PC this morning, running latest 11, and when I get to the point to type in my pin or code -- I typed one of four numbers -- and my desktop background appeared in about 65% of the screen on the left side. I hadn't finished my pin yet and then that background picture expanded to its proper size and the taskbar appeared. Then it went to sleep, black screen. I touched the spacebar and the functioning PC returned -- only to go to sleep again (or black out). Now I was racing to do a reboot, it took two tries because the screen was going in and out -- and all is well.

What shocked me the most was it was able to login with the PIN. Whoa. I ran an SFC and it came up fine.

I know this will upset Linux zealots but this is EXACTLY the type of bug I get in Linux minutes after installation. Wonky donkey stuff.

Oh wait. This may be a Radeon Software thing.

Just a guess, when switching on the computer had some generic graphics drivers and before you could finish logging in it downloaded the proper graphics drivers from Windows Update and installed them. This would explain the blanking of the screen. This happens while changing screen resolution or replacing the graphics drivers, deleting the old monitor driver and installing the new monitor driver.

Thanks Spapa. That explains that. And yes, the AMD stuff had to be updated. But it's weird how it got me into the system before logging in.

One weird after effect of all this is that when I got to use my GREENSHOT screengrabber software it momentarily cancels out my display settings while capturing. For me that means my LG OLED TV goes from an eye soothing color to blinding white and blue 'full' display for a second.

Screen caps --
