Win7 Pro Retail Upgrade to Win 10 Pro, to Win11 Pro 24h2 OS Build 26.100.2454
For about the past 6 months occasionally I would have some bsods and screen freezing which required a reboot.
Finally determined virtual ram was the issue. I do not remember which win11 update was installed when the issue started. A couple of years ago I limited the vram setting because I thought 32G actual ram was sufficient.

Anyhow a few weeks ago a debug message indicated an insufficient vram error. So I changed the vram setting to allow win to determine what it needed. Since then there have been no bsods or app freezes, None.

But during troubleshooting I did notice at some point win had created a duplicate recovery partition on one of my backup drives. I understand how this can happen but I failed to notice it until recently.

I was able to re-establish the recovery partition to my boot drive. I understand the purpose of the recovery partition and that it may not be necessary but I also realized I do not know exactly how the recovery partiton works. If it exists on a physical drive, does it still need and/or reference "c:\RecoveryWindowsRewinpmre.win"?

Your thoughts and expertise is welcome.

The partition issue should have been posted separately. That partition may have been created by whatever was used for the backups. Or if the drive was repurposed from a previous install of Windows it may have been a left-over.

As for Virtual Memory/paging file/swapfile, some/most program installations will look for/require a minimum amount be enabled, probably around 2GB, regardless of how much physical RAM is installed. The same applies in having a Temp folder on the same drive as Windows, program installs look for it. I always keep it active at 1.5 times the physical RAM and on the same drive as Windows is installed on plus maintaining about 20% free space on the Windows drive.

I presume an Admin moved this post from where I originally placed it.

I was mostly looking for other's recent regarding the VM settings influencing crashes. You provided that. Thank you. It took me awhile to associate the vram limits with the crashes. The win debug tool helped. identify it.

Regarding the additional partition, I am familiar how they can be accidentally created. A some folks have done in the past I have searched these forums, microsoft, majorgeeks etc but have not found the specific details I aam asking about.
Thanks, James.
