File explorer irresponsive if network locations / letter-mapped network drives offline

Hi, is there a setting in the Windows 11 file explorer / registry to determine how long to search for missing network locations / letter-mapped network drives?
My NAS is currently offline and it leaves file explorer in a completely irresponsive state for about 10 minutes and it did so before when my network was under heavy load.
I know I could disconnect them but as I understand it that means deleting them.

Thanks in advance.

You can try setting the RestoreConnection value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider to zero (0). If you don't have that entry, create a new REG_DWORD with that name and value. I'm not sure if this still works on Windows 11, but it won't hurt anything if it's no longer valid.

I'm a hardware guy, however Google had some interesting suggestions.

To determine how long Windows 11 waits for missing network drives or locations,
adjust the KeepConn registry value to modify the client-side UNC connection timeout, or use EnableLinkedConnections to resolve elevation-based mapped drive issues. The default is typically 600 seconds (10 minutes).

Registry Settings for Network Drive Timeouts
  • Change Reconnection Timeout (KeepConn):
    • Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters
    • Value: KeepConn (DWORD)
    • Description: Set the value to a lower number (in seconds) to make Windows give up faster on disconnected network drives. The default is 600 (10 minutes).
  • Map Network Drives for All Users (Fix Disappearance Issues):
    • Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    • Value: EnableLinkedConnections (DWORD)
    • Data: Set to 1. This allows mapped drives to be shared between elevated (Administrator) and non-elevated applications.
  • Adjust Server Disconnect Timeout:
    • Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
    • Value: autodisconnect (REG_DWORD)
    • Data: ffffffff (Hexadecimal) – This disables the automatic disconnection of idle network sessions, which can prevent drives from seeming "missing".

KeepConn and AutoDisconnect are for setting disconnects when you haven't used a mapped drive in a while. In this case, the NAS isn't accessible from the get-go.

Here's a PowerShell script to check the connection to the NAS and map a drive if it's available, if no one posts any cooler ideas.

Powershell:
Set-StrictMode -Version 'latest'

$InformationPreference = [Management.Automation.ActionPreference]::Continue

# ====== CONFIGURATION ======
[string]$DriveLetter = 'Z:'
[string]$NASHost     = 'banana'        # hostname or IP
[string]$SharePath   = "\\$($NASHost)\ShareName"
[int]$TimeoutSec  = 2            # ping timeout
# ===========================

Write-Information "Checking connectivity to $NASHost..."

# Test connectivity (fast fail)
$reachable = Test-Connection -ComputerName $NASHost -Count 1 -Quiet -TimeoutSeconds $TimeoutSec

if ($reachable) {
    Write-Information "NAS is reachable. Mapping drive..."

    # Remove existing mapping if present
    if (Get-PSDrive -Name $DriveLetter.TrimEnd(":") -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue) {
        Write-Information "Removing existing mapping..."
        net use $DriveLetter /delete /y | Out-Null
    }

    # Map drive (non-persistent prevents Windows reconnect delays)
    net use $DriveLetter $SharePath /persistent:no | Out-Null

    Write-Information "Drive mapped successfully."
}
else {
    Write-Information "NAS is not reachable. Skipping drive mapping."
}

I would try this in this order until it is fixed:

1. ) Open File Explorer
Click the three dots → Options
Uncheck: “Always Show availability status”

2.) Disable offline files:

Control Panel → Sync Center → Manage Offline Files

3.) Disable Network Discovery in Advanced Sharing Settings:

Settings > network and internet > advanced network settings > advanced sharing settings > Turn off network discovery.

You can always re-enable then whenever you wish to use it, assuming that you only have that as a network device.
